V/A "The FolkScene Collection, Volume Two" (Red House) Last week, we discussed KCRW in California and their music program "Morning Becomes Eclectic." Today we're going to talk about a program called "FolkScene" on Los Angeles' Pacifica station KPFK-FM. Every Sunday night, Roz Larman and her husband Howard present some of the country's most notable folk artists in an intimate and engaging setting. "FolkScene" isn't a new show. As a matter of fact, Roz and Howard will soon celebrate FolkScene's 30th year on the air. To help commemorate this event, the fine folks at FolkScene have just released a sequel to the compilation "From The Heart Of Studio A." This time, it's just called "The FolkScene Collection, Volume Two." With performances ranging from Tom Waits singing "The Heart Of Saturday Night" in 1975 to Peter Case singing "Let Me Fall" in 1998, it is clear that "FolkScene" has presented some truly incredible music over the years. Highlights on this compilation include Lucinda Williams performing "Little Angel, Little Brother" and Nanci Griffith's solo rendition of "Love At The Five & Dime." There are also powerful performances from the likes of Greg Brown, Tom Russell, Vince Gill and Patty Larkin. With lesser-known artists like Stephen Fearing and Eliza Gilkyson given space alongside The Byrds' Chris Hillman and the up-and-coming Jim Lauderdale, this collection is a pleasure from start to finish.
