Memory Lane
On a sad note, Zum Deutschen Eck, the North Side's German cuisine institution for forty-four years, closed January 9. But they're still answering the phone. Those working to clear the restaurant say that the owner, one Mr. Wirth, simply decided to retire. But the neighborhood rumor mill has it that the restaurant's chalet-like confines at 2924 North Southport were sacrificed to the gentrification monster and will probably become condos. "It hasn't sold, so it will probably be torn down," one source says. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, the restaurant is asking those who've dined there over the years to send comments and remembrances for placement in a scrapbook that's being assembled. And restaurant souvenirs should be available in April.

Political irony
The Illinois AFL-CIO released its endorsements for the March 21 primary elections Tuesday, and though there were few surprises, there was a singular bit of self-promotion. Of the 112 races, the union gave the nod to only seven Republicans, mostly incumbents—which, considering that Democrats tend to be more union friendly—isn't particularly odd. But in case anyone had doubts about which way the wind blows, the union also issued this statement: "In related news, the Illinois AFL-CIO announced that thirty-two union members will be represented as delegates for presidential candidate Al Gore on the March ballot."

Leave a penny
Don't forget, Friday marks the first "Penny Day" on the Illinois toll roads. No Tolls, Inc., a Sugar Grove-based citizens group working to turn the tollways into freeways, is encouraging all motorists to save pennies during the week, and then, each Friday, dump them into the automatic collection baskets to pay their tolls. "If they are willing, we would like to see motorists pay their tolls in pennies every day," says Russell Johnson, president of No Tolls. For now they're just focusing on Friday; however, you don't have to just save them up—No Tolls encourages people to "collect the ones scattered about in their homes," or "stop by their banks and purchase rolls of pennies." In addition, Johnson says, if you've got the time, go out of your way and hand pennies to the attendants.
