EASY RIDERS
Snappy suggestions for places you can drive in a day

Written by Dave Chamberlain, Jonathan Mahalak, Ray Pride, Elaine Richardson and Margaret Wappler.

As much as we love Chicago, sometimes, especially in the dead heat of summer, you want to hop in the car and motor it somewhere else. And while the road trip might not be the inexpensive vacation it once was (cheap gas = oxymoron), it’s still a damn fine way to see some of the more fascinating bits and pieces of places near, far and about eight hours in between.

What you’ve got here is a guide. Something to get you started, as well as a roundup of some places we thought might be worth the trip. As brevity is good and we don’t want to spoil things for you, what follows are highlights with some basic information—how far, how to get there (generally speaking), what it’s going to cost once you arrive, interesting places to stop on the way and the something not to be missed. We’ve spread it out into five categories: Wine and Dine deals with food and drink (mostly drink) travel options—and with these we’d encourage you to plan carefully so you don’t drink and drive. Out and About details some outdoor options. Take me out to the Ballgame gives you trips to see other cities’ baseball teams. Culture Club offers culturally stimulating retreats. And The Twilight Zone offers trips that are, essentially, large-scale adventures in kitsch. So go forth, have fun and watch out for state troopers.

Note: All distances are approximate and all directions are to the best of our knowledge. Things change, so we strongly suggest that you not only consult maps before you leave, but that you take a road atlas with you on the trip. In addition, you should call to check any times, tour information, etc. before you go.
