TIP OF THE WEEK
Michael Pollan

Brian Hieggelke

Great science writing, or any great writing for that matter, takes a subject that may be of little interest to the reader (say, botany) and not only engages said reader in its subject , but creates a curiosity that outlives the time spent with the book. In the masterful "Botany of Desire," Michael Pollan chooses four plants that epitomize human desires: the apple (the desire for sweetness), the tulip (the desire for beauty), marijuana (the desire for intoxication) and the potato (the desire for control), and traces the parallel evolution of these "domestic" plants with human development. His touchstones are Darwin's theory of artificial selection and the ancient Greek notions of the competing forces of the Appollonian and the Dionysian. He weaves this complex web of science, history and philosophy with the grace of a novelist and in doing so, he awakens yet another desire within his reader: hunger for more.

Michael Pollan reads June 27 at Barbara's Bookstore, 1350 North Wells, (312)642-5044.

In her new novel, "Lucky in the Corner," acclaimed novelist Carol Anshaw thrusts us into the life of a typical Chicago family for a year or so. The family has its idiosyncrasies, as do most: mom left dad years back for a life of domestic lesbian tranquility; uncle is straight but likes to dress in drag.

To most Americans, Japanese pop culture is the "Bizzaro" version of our own. Chicago writer Isaac Adamson makes the most of this mystique in his Billy Chaka stories, the second of which, "Hokkaido Popsicle," just hit the streets.
