TIP OF THE WEEK
Carol Anshaw

Brian Hieggelke

In her new novel, "Lucky in the Corner," acclaimed novelist Carol Anshaw thrusts us into the life of a typical Chicago family for a year or so. The family has its idiosyncrasies, as do most: mom left dad years back for a life of domestic lesbian tranquility; uncle is straight but likes to dress in drag; daughter is at the brink of adulthood, ready or not. Into this otherwise blissful world, a storm brews--a torrid love affair for one, an unexpected child for another. It's a moving, witty and entertaining novel, so easy to enjoy that its structural accomplishments might be overlooked. While Anshaw's a master of the punchy, just-right sentence, her ability to craft a complex but unobtrusive structure--two protagonists, graceful, uncontrived shifts in time from the present to the near past to the flashback--is a real lesson in the art of fiction. A 1993 profile of Anshaw has been republished at Newcitychicago.com.

Carol Anshaw reads from "Lucky in the Corner" May 29, 7:30pm at Women & Children First, 5233 North Clark, (773)769-9299. In addition, she will read at the Printers Row Book Fair, June 2, at 57th Street Books June 4 at 7pm, and as part of the Harold Washington Reading Series at the Chicago Public Library, June 11, at 5:30pm.

TIP OF THE WEEK
To most Americans, Japanese pop culture is the "Bizzaro" version of our own. Chicago writer Isaac Adamson makes the most of this mystique in his Billy Chaka stories, the second of which, "Hokkaido Popsicle," just hit the streets.

AMERICAN ICONS: Garbo Lives
It's probably safe to say they're not making Hollywood icons anymore. But how did they make them in the first place?

In "The Hip Hop Generation," Bakari Kitwana lays out a powerful and controversial case for an activist political force emerging from the culturally and economically dominant foundation of rap music. (He cites the Christian Coalition as a model!)
