“Idol Anxiety,” a small, engaging show at the Smart Museum of Art, investigates the age-old tension between material image and divine form. The artworks—culled from Greek, Christian, Judaic and ancient Near Eastern sources—show a range of strategies that humans have employed for getting at divinity: painted icons, altarpieces, worshipper figurines all present different pathways for contemplating god in visual form
