Seven Days in Chicago

Way with Words
How do you put your love for Barack Obama into words? At artist showcase and fundraiser Writers and Cartoonists for Obama, October 15 at the Chopin Theater, see and hear just how it's done. All mediums, from song to print to cartoon, will offer a unique political message. The reception and signed-book silent auction will be followed by brief readings from each of the attending writers, which include Sara Paretsky, Stuart Dybek and more than fifteen others. "The readings will be political in the largest sense," says organizer Sandi Wisenberg. Following the readings, there will be the viewing of the final Obama/McCain debate. All ticket sales ($60 at the door, $50 in advance) go to Obama for America, but those under the age of 25 will only have to pay their age to enter.

Working Vice
Though a law-school graduate, Lauri Apple realized that there is still a lot to learn about the government. Given the spirit of the campaign season, she focused her inquiries on previous vice presidents. "I studied history and law and there are all these guys in the number-two seat that I couldn't tell you anything about," she says. Apple created lappleveeps.blogspot.com as a venue to post her portraits of the U.S.’s vice presidents each day until November 4. Along with each portrait is an "informal, yet informative" history of the former politicians. "There's value in studying history and learning about people from our past,” Apple says. “I think it’s important to know as much as possible, what they were facing and how they handled the important issues of the day from Civil War to economic crises."

In the Garage
The Pontiac Café, a once auto-mechanic turned Wicker Park landmark café and saloon, will soon be sliding its garage doors shut—for good. After fifteen years in business, the establishment’s owners have decided to move on to other endeavors. According to bartender Turan Yon, the bar’s expected to close between October 17-24.
