Tip of the Week
Lollapalooza 2008

Tom Lynch

Well, it’s here. The weekend-long fest of countless bands, after-shows, blood, sweat, tears and (fingers crossed) sunshine. With each passing year it’s been based in Chicago, Perry Farrell’s baby has gotten better and better, organized thoughtfully and with care, and has been an increasingly enjoyable experience (and it better be with those ticket prices). Not to mention the lineups, which also improve each year. There are too many artists performing to list here, so I’ll just give my top five sets to catch for each day. Friday: Yeasayer (2:15pm, AT&T), Gogol Bordello (4:15pm, AT&T), The Cool Kids (7pm, BMI), Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks (7:15pm, MySpace) and Radiohead (8pm, AT&T). Saturday: DeVotchKa (3:30pm, PlayStation 3), Explosions in the Sky (4:30pm, Bud Light), Okkervil River (5:30pm, PlayStation 3), Broken Social Scene (6:30pm, Bud Light) and Lupe Fiasco (6:30pm, AT&T). Sunday: Kid Sister (12:15pm, AT&T, See Feature), Chromeo (3:15pm, MySpace), The National (7:15pm, PlayStation 3), Nine Inch Nails (8:15pm, Bud Light) and Kanye West (8:30pm, AT&T). Whew. This is already exhausting.

Lollapalooza takes place August 1-3 in Grant Park. For tickets, www.lollapalooza.com

“Boo Human,” the recently released new record from Joan of Arc, certainly the most accessible record from the band since its early days, treads in desperation, loneliness and pure anger with such conviction that over-the-top emotive singer-songwriters should listen and take notes

The immensely popular blog Stuff White People Like, created by LA-based writer Christian Lander, was spawned from a Internet-conversation he had with a friend about “The Wire.” Only a short time later Lander’s satiric site had thousands of hits, presumably attracting the liberal white people that Lander was so cleverly, and at times hysterically, dissecting

With a selection of hip-hop artists both mainstream and underground, the current Rock the Bells tour will satisfy everyone’s needs, especially those turned-off by the hipper-than-thou nature of this weekend’s Pitchfork Music Festival
