BAM! Belmont Arts and Music Fest

Tom Lynch

The second annual Belmont Arts and Music Fest hits Roscoe Village this week with an all-around impressive lineup, much better than your average street-fest fare of cover bands who dig guitar solos way too much. With two stages, both Saturday and Sunday offer reasons to get out of the house and hit Damen Avenue. Saturday features performances by Unwed Sailor, Sybris, Maritime, Waco Brothers and headliner sets from Cursive and The Redwalls; Sunday’s lineup ain’t too shabby either, with performances by Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Johnathan Rice, American Music Club and Smoking Popes, among others. Think of it as a low-key warm-up for the bigger music fests to come in the approaching weeks—build up your stamina for these all-day affairs. You know the drill.

BAM! Belmont Arts and Music Fest, June 28-29, Belmont and Damen, (773)327-5123. (2008-06-24)

Our Phair Lady
"Exile in Guyville,” arguably the most important indie-rock record to spawn from Chicago in the 1990s, not only was an eye-opening success crafted by a girl in a boys club, but also a sweaty, personal introduction to a songwriter who would wow us with such natural expression and talent only to break our hearts later in gross disappointment

Soundtrack to Summer
Jorge Ledezma first had his Alla epiphany while driving down North Avenue, near Ashland. That’s where the idea was born to create, along with his brother Angel Ledezma and singer Lupe Martinez, a psych-pop act, a bit loungey, dabbling in Brazilian Tropicalia, all in Spanish. The group had originally started playing together in synth-heavy instrumental band Defender, so there was little acclimation between musicians involved. Still, it took four years to complete the band’s debut, “Es Tiempo,” perhaps because Ledezma set his goals high when the band was born

Second records for bands like Nashville’s garage-punk four-piece powerhouse Be Your Own Pet are always tricky—the band’s explosion of power chords and singer Jemina Pearl’s youngster vocal howl on its self-titled debut was a muscular shot to the gut
