Taxidermy: Acid Girls, War Games, Harvard Bass, Sirhan

Duke Shin

Blog house?! That’s what passes for sub-genres these days? Hell, at least other sounds similarly maligned with bad labels get somewhat descriptive names that hint at what’s to be expected—like, say, "fidget-house" or "dub-step." You can’t blame the artists for stupid names, but you can blame the So-Cal spawned Acid Girls for the enthusiastic response their music causes. Surgically cut-up retro rhythms hearken back to an Aphex Twin-meeting-golden-era Felix on "Until Your Head Comes Off." Meanwhile, a jangly punk sneer meets electro-dance on their remix of Health’s "Triceratops." Besides their productions and remixes, Acid Girls also flex their range with DJ sets that might contain anything from the expected (Boys Noize, Simian Mobile Disco) to the unexpected (Fugees). Tonight they headline Taxidermy. This 18-and-over party is the debut event for music blog Trash Menagerie, whose own Local Hero joins Chicago house/techno stalwart Angel Alanis as War Games, along with Harvard Bass and Sirhan. Maybe you can ask them if there’s something they can do about "blog-house." If not, I guess you’ll have to settle for the newest in innovative (and occasionally incestuous) dance music…y’know, for kids.

Taxidermy featuring Acid Girls, War Games, Harvard Bass and Sirhan at Debonair, 1575 North Milwaukee, (773)227-7990, June 26 from 9pm-2am. $10 for 18-21, $5 for 21-and-over.

Sure, it’s been a minute since Crobar was musically relevant in this city, but from time-to-time they do sneak in a surprise booking here or there to supplement their cheddar guest hosts (see: reality TV, Playmates) and dubious commercial remix/proggy-house lineups. House legend Erick Morillo and Dutch electro-rogue Jamie Fanatic recently dropped by, and tonight, another global superstar materializes to grace Crobar’s balcony DJ booth: French disco/house heavyweight Bob Sinclar

Philipp Jung sits at a Swiss restaurant in Berlin and waits for his order during a rare two-day stretch at home between touring. Joining him at the table are some new friends from Iceland, where Jung and his partner-in-crime Patrick Bodmer recently holed up to start work on what will hopefully become their full-length album debut

The techno and left-field electronic-artist promoters at Meiotic have an appealing edge to their events, supplementing their minimal and micro-house lineups with retro-futuristic bookings that often connect the dots between current trends and past innovations (like past bookings Metro Area and Egyptian Lover)

It’s quite possible to envision the collapse of a specialnewband who had been honored/saddled with the tag of "Justice’s Favorite New Band" on Pitchfork—all before the Stateside release of its debut album. Luckily for us, the trio of young Aussies in Midnight Juggernauts appears poised to capitalize from endorsements tossed down from on high
