Be Your Own Pet

Tom Lynch

Second records for bands like Nashville’s garage-punk four-piece powerhouse Be Your Own Pet are always tricky—the band’s explosion of power chords and singer Jemina Pearl’s youngster vocal howl on its self-titled debut was a muscular shot to the gut, yet with the attention the band’s received since, it wouldn’t be surprising if the band candied it up a bit for its next offering. When I got a look at the new one and saw the “Parental Advisory: Explicit Content” sticker, I was somewhat relieved. While still too glossy, “Get Awkward,” this tricky second record, keeps the band’s spirit intact and gets more ambitious with tempo changes and more complex transitions and guitar parts. That said, it’s still Pearl’s maddening swagger and infectious presence that makes Be Your Own Pet so likeable—“Now that I’m 20, I don’t want to have responsibility, I don’t want to be a part of society” she convincingly yells on opener “Super Soaked” (awesome title), and who could blame her. This band attacks, so be on the defensive. She Wants Revenge headlines.

Be Your Own Pet plays June 12 at the House of Blues, 329 North Dearborn, (312)923-2000.

Leader of Sun Kil Moon and the defunct Red House Painters—as well as a recording/touring artist under his own name, as evidenced on this jaunt—Mark Kozelek, indie-folk singer-songwriter mega-talent, has succeeded in breaking all hearts once again with “April,” the recently released second record or original material by Sun Kil Moon

Lit 50
Chicago’s book world can be a quiet place. In part due to the solitary nature of the work, and in part due to the void of publishing parties that keep New York’s assorted gawkers journaling away, it’s easy to think nothing new is happening. Jeffrey Eugenides moves to town, Jeffrey Eugenides moves away, and no one seems to notice. Then, bam!, Aleksandar Hemon publishes “The Lazarus Project,” the comparisons to Nabokov resume and suddenly we’re the center of the universe again, if only for a moment

Remember Your Youth
M83’s recent record finds Anthony Gonzalez venturing deeper into the pop realm, even stating openly that this collection of songs are a celebration of his teenage years—the 1980s, adolescent love and, of course, the John Hughes movies

For two days Division Street in Wicker Park will be overcrowded with what I like to call festival people whose sole summertime enjoyment comes from attending every single one of these weekend events with their friends, their flip-flops and their strollers, but at least there are two days of what should be fine music performance
