Tip of the Week
Mark Kozelek

Tom Lynch

Leader of Sun Kil Moon and the defunct Red House Painters—as well as a recording/touring artist under his own name, as evidenced on this jaunt—Mark Kozelek, indie-folk singer-songwriter mega-talent, has succeeded in breaking all hearts once again with “April,” the recently released second record or original material by Sun Kil Moon, a long, long journey led by melancholic acoustic guitars, jammy, rhythmic instrumental interludes and Kozelek’s warm, soothing voice. (A song like record-opener “Lost Verses,” with its reflective lyrical content and gentle approach to transitions and progressions, is exactly what Kozelek does best and introduces the record just as it should be introduced.) Since he’s touring under his own name, expect a set list filled with material spanning his entire career—from the early Red House Painters sentimentality to the cover-record material of AC/DC and Modest Mouse and on. I’ve seen Kozelek twice—once solo and once with a team of guitarists and violinists—and both times I’ve emerged a bit weepy. I wouldn’t expect anything different tonight.

Mark Kozelek plays June 8 at the Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 North Lincoln, (773)728-6000, at 8pm.

M83’s recent record finds Anthony Gonzalez venturing deeper into the pop realm, even stating openly that this collection of songs are a celebration of his teenage years—the 1980s, adolescent love and, of course, the John Hughes movies

For two days Division Street in Wicker Park will be overcrowded with what I like to call festival people whose sole summertime enjoyment comes from attending every single one of these weekend events with their friends, their flip-flops and their strollers, but at least there are two days of what should be fine music performance

Dressing Pretty
“Couples,” The Long Blondes sophomore record on Rough Trade, released at the start of this month, is darker in nature, if even larger in scope, Jackson and crew—which includes principle songwriter Dorian Cox and a drummer tagged Screech—dig a little deeper into the group’s collective consciousness and emerge from the hole a little dirty

Vice Records’ artists Dark Meat—a seventeen-piece rock collective from Athens, Georgia—somehow, amongst all the chaos that comes with throwing psychedelic rock, jazz, marching-band horn accompaniment, bluesy interludes and gospel into a rather large blender, makes “Universal Indians,” the band’s bold new record, a concrete experience, not to mention a mesmerizing and inspiring one as wel
