Hot Chip (DJ Set)

Zeb Resman

Anyone who frequents clubs has, at one time or another, been subjected to the "so-and-so-from-that-band DJ set," where an otherwise talented musician gets billed to DJ, and proceeds to trainwreck, leaving many on the dance floor scratching their heads, wondering what the hell is happening. This is not the case when the members of Hot Chip get control of the turntables. In between the release of their critically acclaimed 2006 album, "The Warning," and the wildly eclectic new "Made in the Dark," the London-based electro-pop collective found time to compile and produce a DJ Kicks album for K7. The playlist alone shows that these fellas aren’t rookies when it comes to track selection, blending techno, pop and their own single "My Piano" into a cohesive hour-plus mix. Tonight, after their performance at the Vic, Hot Chip throws the post-show party at Smart Bar. Word on the street is that everyone in the band has experience in the DJ booth, so expect all five of them to take a turn on the decks.

Hot Chip DJs their official after-party with Jerome Derradji at Smart Bar, 3370 North Clark, (773)549-0203, on April 17 from 10pm-4am. $10, $5 with Vic ticket stub or wristband. (2008-04-15)

Spin Control
These days, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t like the Junior Boys. Since forming in 1999, they’ve been cranking out their own unique brand of electronic pop while earning praise from both critics and fans alike. Recently though, the group, consisting of Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus, have put their live shows on the back burner, trading in their instruments for a pair of turntables as they embark on a string of DJ gigs, which is nothing new to these veteran jocks

Throughout the month of February, a new and unique event has been ongoing near Millennium Park. The Museum of Modern Ice, which features artist Gordon Halloran’s "Paintings Below Zero," has been attracting crowds every day of the week offering a wide assortment of daytime family-oriented activities. On Saturday evenings, however, audiences braving the cold have been able to see, for free, intimate sit-down musical performances inside the American Express Heated Tent as part of Chill Out at MoMI

Tip of the Week
It seems like it’s been forever since Mr. Scruff has come to Chicago. But that doesn’t mean that this Manchester native has been sitting around at home eating pie and drinking tea

Sabbah Day
Few artists have as impressive credentials as Cheb i Sabbah. The Algerian native has been performing and producing music for nearly four decades. Throughout his career, which has taken him around the world, Cheb i Sabbah has seen and experienced lots of change since he began DJing in Paris as a teenager in the 1960s
