Bombay Beatbox: Sub Swara, Janaka Selekta

Duke Shin

The boys at Bombay Beatbox are back again with the return of a favorite guest and the Chicago debut of a new one. The former is San Francisco’s Janaka Selekta, who weaves a darkly sensual musical fabric over Eastern influences and rolling breakbeats. The latter is global dub-loving collective Sub Swara, whose unique live/electronic hybrid performances have been heating up dance floors in their hometown of New York City and beyond. Although Sub Swara has labeled their sound as "Indo-dub," Janaka Selekta is actually the more musically exotic of the two acts. Sub Swara’s sound seems to owe more of its influence to dub/break masters like Freq-Nasty and Bassnectar, even occasionally sharing their penchant for juxtapositions of party beats and socially conscious lyrics (for example, check out Sub Swara’s remix of Saul Williams "Not In Our Name"). Tonight’s party is also the official pre-party for Saturday’s massive Resonate Chicago art and music event, which features both musical acts, along with scores of other DJs and live acts, interactive art and much, much more. You’d have to be a dharma bum to sleep on either event.

Sub Swara and Janaka Selekta join Bombay Beatbox residents Warp & Radiohiro at Sonotheque, 1444 West Chicago, (312)267-7600, on March 28, 9pm-2am. Visit sonotheque.net for more info. For more info on Resonate Chicago, check out resonatechicago.com (2008-03-25)

Still Leaning, Still Bouncing
Dyment is working hard on piecing together enough tracks for a debut artist LP, with the end of the year set as a tentative goal. Having recently moved outside of London to cut down on distractions, Dyment will also be heading to L.A. to work with Dubsided label-mate superstar Dave Taylor (Switch, Solid Groove) before hitting Chicago en route to Miami’s Winter Music Conference

Spin Control
Nearly thirty years after radio DJ Steve Dahl and his infamous Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park heralded the demise of the disco era, a new virulent strain of the disco bug seems to be popping up around town. "I do have this fantasy where I ask Steve to host a giant outdoor party called ‘Disco Resurrection’ where he will publicly apologize and admit that he is actually a huge disco fan," says Samantha Roberts, better known in DJ circles as SR-71

A Farewell to Ohms
A relatively nondescript building with a red ornamental door gives way to a stairwell leading to a walk-up loft. And the building is moving. Literally. The wooden floor in the front room alternates between the gentle reverberations of the bass, and the alarming bounce of dancing feet. It’s only a paltry 12:30am, but the party—celebrating local DJ Lee Foss’ departure to Los Angeles—already resembles an urban menagerie
