Looking Green
Putting Your Best (Green) Face Forward

Molly Each

Okay, I’ll admit it. I’ve never taken a huge interest in makeup brushes before. I won’t flinch while splurging on the not-entirely budget-savvy Nars blush or MAC eye shadow, but application is last on my list of shopping priorities. I use my brushes for entirely too long, and when it’s time to replace them I simply head over to my nearest Walgreens to scoop up the most cost-effective model (read: ninety-nine cents). But in my continued eco-friendly lifestyle efforts, I added Ecotools makeup brushes to my "must-have" list, alongside recycled seaweed journals and recycled pop-tab purses.

Ecotools, a new line of Earth-conscious bath and cosmetics products from Paris Presents, is aware of the environment from top to bottom: bristles are made from animal-free taklon and the metallic ferrule on the brush is constructed from recycled aluminum cans. The handles are made from highly sustainable bamboo and fit snugly in reusable pouches, which are printed with plant-based ink. Each package offers a quick tip for helping the environment, and aside from all of the reduce/reuse/recycle benefits, Ecotools will donate one percent of its annual sales to the organization 1% for the Planet, a group of businesses who use their resources to improve our world.

For those who put quality on par with eco-friendliness, there’s good news: the brushes aren’t just eco-friendly; they’re some of the best out there. The bristles are soft and silky across the skin and the handles have a comfortable texture. The perfectly angular cuts of the brushes ensure that the entire cheekbone is coated smoothly and evenly, and that even the deepest eye creases are touched by eye shadow. And they’re as good for your wallet as they are for Mother Earth, with their entire collection falling between $2.99 and $7.99. Plus, there’s no need to trek all the way downtown when it’s time to replenish. They’re available at Walgreens, so I can still conveniently head down the block when I need a new one. Which might be more often now that doing so little can make a whole lot of difference.

Find Ecotools at local Walgreens, Kmart and Ulta locations, or check out www.parispresents.com to find a store near you.

In the Closet
Susan Maxwell enters my small walk-in closet. I am embarrassed. This means that someone (aside from myself) is witnessing my overflowing hamper of dirty clothes, my makeshift shelves, my unorganized heap of purses and my old/outdated/just plain awful clothing that I haven’t yet brought over to the Brown Elephant

Family Style
Friday night at Leaders 1354 in Wicker Park and a DJ spins beats in the back of the room. Each person who walks through the door is greeted like an old friend, and small groups of guys chat amiably, admiring t-shirts, sneakers and intricate wall murals in between conversations. They speak their own language; a language peppered with phrases like "treated," "kicks" and "throwing out the tongue" (a reference to shoes rather than the mouth). It doesn’t take long to realize that this isn’t just a shopping stop for the customers here

For an accessories lover there are few experiences that rival a trip to West Loop boutique Bess and Loie. Clutches, handbags and duffels decorate the room at all eye levels, interspersed with jewelry, hats and mittens. It’s the ultimate accessories haven, a place with beautiful, classic pieces that will stay in your style repertoire for years to come

PRESENTS
The lights on Michigan Avenue are lit, the bell ringers have taken their posts and you’ve been eating leftover turkey since Thanksgiving ended. Looks like it is time to make that list and check it twice (or eight or twelve times) to make sure you’ve got the perfect gift for everyone in your gift-exchange lineup. So we’ve ditched the drummers drumming, lords-a-leaping and the partridge in the pear tree to give you our twelve picks for the best gifts to give
