Tip of the Week
Mr. Scruff

Zeb Resman

It seems like it’s been forever since Mr. Scruff has come to Chicago. But that doesn’t mean that this Manchester native has been sitting around at home eating pie and drinking tea. Keeping a busy tour schedule that takes him around the world and releasing tracks on Ninja Tune have kept him very busy. Luckily for us though, he has found the time to make an appearance at Smart Bar to deliver one of his signature six-hour sets. Anyone who has witnessed one of his marathon performances has no doubt been marking off days on the calendar in anticipation. Controlling a club’s atmosphere for an entire evening is what Scruff does best; chilling you out, bringing you up and then right back down again as he spans the spectrum of music. From funk, to house, from drum ‘n’ bass to jazz, he’ll spin just about anything, as long as it’s got "soul." Accompanying him will be his usual cartoon companions, an assortment of characters from Scruff’s own imagination, brought to life on projection screens. There is a discounted price before midnight, so forget about being fashionably late. Go early, stay late and be prepared to have fun with one of the world’s most lovable DJs.

Mr. Scruff plays a six-hour set at Smart Bar, 3730 North Clark, (773)549-0203, December 14 from 10pm-4am. $10 before midnight, $15 after.

Rob Garza is a happy man. And why shouldn’t he be? As one half of the legendary DC duo Thievery Corporation, he has been creating some of the best laid-back electronic music of the past decade. Now, he’s flying solo with Dust Galaxy, a project that has cast him in an unfamiliar role: singing and playing guitar in front of a live band

Spin Control
After four years, Mo Wax Records founder and super-producer James Lavelle returns with partner Richard File as UNKLE to deliver their latest release, "War Stories," an album that is quite a departure from UNKLE’s previous albums, the DJ Shadow-helmed "Psyence Fiction," and "Never, Never, Land." With live musicians instead of samplers, "War Stories" is more rock-influenced

Tip of the Week
In the world of electronic music, Karsh Kale (pronounced Kursh Kah-Lay) is what some would call a "triple threat." For nearly a decade, the New York-based producer/DJ/musician has been fusing classical Indian music with everything from house to hip-hop to create a very chill, funky and unique hybrid
