In the world of electronic music, Karsh Kale (pronounced Kursh Kah-Lay) is what some would call a "triple threat." For nearly a decade, the New York-based producer/DJ/musician has been fusing classical Indian music with everything from house to hip-hop to create a very chill, funky and unique hybrid. After four releases on Six Degrees Records, countless remixes/collaborations and founding Tabla Beat Science, Kale has established himself as one of the most respected, cutting-edge artists in both electronic and world music today. Tonight, he celebrates the release of "Breathing Under Water," his latest collaboration with Anoushka Shankar (daughter of Ravi), at Sonotheque by performing a "DJ Electrik Tabla Set." With a title like that, one should be intrigued and curious to see what it all entails, and it’s a guarantee that it will be a proper live display of Kale’s music. Fusing tablas and turntables, the traditional with the new, this is sure to be a stunning performance you won’t want to miss. Also on the bill tonight are local ethno-beat pushers Warp & Radiohiro (of Bombay Beatbox fame).
Karsh Kale performs with DJ Warp & Radiohiro at Sonotheque, 1444 West Chicago, (312)226-7600, October 6, at 9pm. $15.
