Steppenwolf Theatre: I Sing America

Dennis Polkow

Two years ago, Steppenwolf Theatre was asked to present a free Millennium Park program which was so successful that the company was asked to return and present the City of Chicago’s official 9/11 commemorative last year, which took on a special significance not only because of the artistry of the performance but because it was held on the fifth anniversary of the events of that day. This year, Steppenwolf ensemble members Martha Lavey, John Mahoney (better known as the father on the long-running NBC TV series "Frasier") and Yasen Peyankov, along with Cheryl Lynn Bruce, Daniel J. Bryant, Penelope Walker and Josephine Lee and the Chicago Children’s Choir, present "I Sing America," directed by Jessica Thebus and produced by Steppenwolf’s newly appointed producer of cultural intersections, Sylvia Ewing, a one-night-only family-friendly performance of poetry, prose and music in celebration of American citizenship and the loving and fiery conversation our country has with its artists. The show will include works by Gwendolyn Brooks, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, slam poet Patricia Smith, and Alan Ginsberg, among others.

"I Sing America" shows September 6 at Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion, Michigan between Randolph and Monroe, (312) 742-1168, at 6:30pm. Free.

Tip of the Week
Although it was enormously popular in its day and many of its songs have remained standards ever since ("I’ll See You Again," "Tara-Ra-Boom-De-Ay"), Noel Coward’s "Bitter Sweet" is so unlike anything else that he ever wrote that most of its rare revivals have been left to opera houses

As part of the Jazz Dance World Congress nightly dance presentations open to the public will be held, taking advantage of such a vast gathering of jazz dancers and companies from Canada, Japan, Italy and Mexico as well as from Los Angeles, Philadelphia, New York, Salt Lake City and Chicago

Tip of the Week
Richard III is that remarkable early play by Shakespeare where the Bard fully developed his villain chops, i.e., his ability to create a character that, though thoroughly despicable, can take the audience into his confidence so disarmingly and with such charm that we become virtually complicit in the crimes that are to follow

Kind of Blue
Imagine for a moment if Metro and Empty Bottle both closed within a few months of each other. Rock clubs are such a vital component of the cultural life of the city that the devastating impact of such an occurrence is virtually unfathomable, yet this is exactly what is happening to Chicago’s jazz scene: the city’s two premier clubs that regularly imported top-name jazz talent are no more
