![]() Tip of the Week Suzette Bross
Symbolism rules the road in today's Chicago photography and Suzette Bross' color images of trucks speeding by on freeways capture the spirit of the times. Reminiscent of Edward Muybridge's studies of galloping horses from more than a century ago, Bross portrays her steel steeds as metaphors of motion, in which tires dissolve into swirling spirals and cabs and trailers resolve into determined projectiles bent on delivering the consumer goods. An unabashed latter-day futurist, Bross reaches her peak when the semis achieve mega-acceleration and the camera can only pay homage to them by recording pure abstractions of fluid vertical lines, as though we were looking at a placid lake cut by a sandbar under a baby blue sky. Ever the mystic, Bross shows us that the result of hyper-dynamism is absolute stillness.
Suzette Bross shows at Schneider Gallery, 230 West Superior, (312)988-4003. Through June 30.
