Tip of the Week
Michael Mayer, Gui Boratto

Duke Shin

Kompakt boss Michael Mayer is no stranger to Chicago, and at every visit, the impishly grinning titan of Teutonic techno brought along power-packed plus-ones like Superpitcher and Reinhart Voigt. Tonight is no exception, as Mayer brings along Brazilian Gui Boratto, who runs a label of his own (Megamusic), and is touring behind his debut album "Chromophobia" (Kompakt). Boratto, also an architect and composer, is adept at building moody rock driven techno (like the breakout hit "Beautiful Song"), glitchy funk freak-outs and, like Mayer, some sublime shuffling rhythms. Meanwhile, if you haven’t had a chance to catch Mayer’s DJ sets, prepare yourself for a dance floor freak-out that bridges the gap between lush slow-burning techno and outright pop moments—previous sets from Mayer have seen such un-techno moments like dropping Daft Punk or Steve & Eydie’s lounge cover of "Black Hole Sun," to maximal effect. Not. To. Be. Missed.

Michael Mayer & Gui Boratto, with Matthew Martin at Smart Bar, 3730 North Clark, (773)549-0203, on June 1 from 10pm-4am. $15.
