Seven Days in Chicago
Motor Music
Out of almost 150 local bands waiting, fingers-crossed, to see if
their music has been voted onto I-GO's "Audio Emissions" compilation
CD, the winners have finally been announced--hip-hop artists Animate
Objects, jazz and lounge artists Billie D and Imelda de la Cruz, rock
band IiwII and world music artists Od Tapo Imi will join Andrew Bird,
Devil in a Woodpile and Mucca Pazza, amongst others, on the disc. "I-GO
members are from every background-- neighborhood, occupation, race,
gender, everything--and they like different types of music," says
I-GO's Melissa Haeffner of the diverse genres of music represented on
the CD. "My goal is that everyone who hears this CD will at least enjoy
one song--and hopefully be introduced to music they might never had
heard otherwise." And while the voting took place online and was up to
the public, Haeffner was confident the winners would be talented enough
to stand up to Bird, Woodpile and the others. "This is Chicago, and we
have so many amazing musicians from every genre," she says. "We
received so much quality music, in fact, our CEO is interested in
repeating the project... Because of the amount of positive response
we've received from the bands, we will probably have to make another CD
to include the good stuff we didn't have space for this time." A
record release party is set for May 31 at Metro, with The Detholz!,
Palliard and Madison Buchanon tapped to perform.Sweet Competitors
Everyone knows that the Cubs and the Sox have enjoyed a spirited
rivalry in Chicago for decades. Even for those who aren't baseball fans,
it is almost a requirement to jump on the bandwagon of one team or the
other. In this spirit, Ann Sather Restaurant and Original Rainbow Cone
have set up an equally friendly wager for the upcoming Cubs-Sox series
May 18-20--if the Sox lose, the South Side's Rainbow Cone will give out
250 free cones to Ann Sather's Belmont customers on May 26, and should
the Cubs lose, Ann Sather will give out 250 of its gigantic cinnamon
rolls to customers at the Original Rainbow Cone shop on Western. "It's
more of a fun thing--since werre a North Side institution and they're a
South Side institution," says Carrie Patino, Ann Sather's office
manager. Who does she think will win? "Since I'm a North Sider I'd say
'go Cubbies'," she laughs, "but ultimately I think the Sox will
win." Rainbow cones, a combination of chocolate, strawberry, pistachio,
Palmer House (cherry-nut blend) and orange sherbet, will also be
available for purchase at Ann Sather's Belmont location on the first day
of the series, from 11am-3pm.
