The Aftermath
Brad Knutson
After five non-stop days together, is the band still intact?
Jeanine O'Toole of The 1900s: Dark moments a-plenty, but the
band is very much still intact and we have Guns N' Roses to thank.
Scott Masson of Office: A couple meltdowns here and there,
but that is always a natural thing for creative people to go through. I
think these trips bring our band closer together, as cornball as that
sounds.
Best Moment:
Edward Anderson of The 1900s: The Schubas/Yard Dog Party was
bordering on magical for me. Everything was just perfect and beautiful.
SM: Playing the Scratchie/New Line Records label showcase at
The Ritz. It was an arrival, if you will.
Most "rock-star moment":
JO: I ran into a friend on 6th Street around 10pm on Thursday
night. He was very drunk, telling me about some girl he was gonna shag
and asking if I had any coke. That's premium rock-star behavior.
EA: Waking up on Friday and learning we were Spin "band of
the day" and on the cover of The Sun-Times entertainment section.
SM: I'd say it was when Office was performing onstage at The
Fader Party, and Iggy Pop, Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon from The Clash and
Pete Townshend were all watching from the audience while we played.
Most embarrassing moment:
JO: My new beau made out with The Black Lips while playing a song
with them. Then I had to introduce him to my bandmates for the first
time. I might have been more proud than embarrassed, though.
EA: Accidentally stealing another band's amp for our
showcase show.
SM: I had a complete panic attack in broad daylight, while I
was getting a free pair of tennis shoes from a beautiful woman.
Moment you'd rather forget:
SM: The moment when Albert Hammond Jr.'s roadies threw our
equipment out into the alley behind The Ritz, after we blew them off the
stage.
JO: A guy I met actually said, "I'm surprised you haven't
heard of us. We're kinda famous."

Old School Sessions
When most people think about the birth of hip-hop, "Rapper's Delight"
by Sugarhill Gang is probably the first thing that comes to mind.
However, true hip-hop fans know that while Sugarhill had the first hit
single, the true pioneers of the genre were DJ Kool Herc and Afrika
Bambaataa

Hooked on the Groove
When a Peter Hook DJ set was first scheduled last year at Smart Bar, it
definitely seemed like it was a unique one-off type of event. However,
just a few months later, Hook's name showed up again on the Smart Bar
bill. While the return was a bit of a surprise, at that point I don't
think anyone was expecting the influential bassist for both Joy Division
and dancefloor legends New Order to quit his day job. Now, however, as
he returns to spin records in Joe Shanahan's basement yet again, it`s
beginning to look as though we may, in fact, have to add
"internationally touring DJ" to Hook's already illustrious resume

Discovery
According to their press bio, Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay first
met each other at a North Paris party where de Rosnay was "spitting in
a girl's hair." Apparently this made quite an impression on Augé, as
not long after the two began working on music together

Spin Control
After more than a decade of work and five albums for local indie
stalwart Thrill Jockey, German electronic duo Mouse on Mars is back with
