While detractors might be quick to label breakbeat DJs as dated,
rave-harkening dinosaurs, this weekend Chicago defiantly plays host to
three separate breakbeat-oriented parties: Hybrid's live performance at
Vision, Lee Coombs spinning at Spy Bar and across the street--on the
same night, nonetheless--the boys from LOT49 storm Sound-Bar's sleek
interior, courtesy of local breaks-pushers Base10. Former Peace Division
member and current LOT49 co-owner Dylan Rhymes took time out to chat
with us about the upcoming gig. The scope of artist productions on LOT49 carry over into quite a
few different genres of music, but overall there does seem to be a
distinct identity to the releases. How do you cultivate identity with so
many divergent sounds? The main ingredient for what we are now doing is will we actually
play the tracks out when DJing. If the answer is yes for both of us then
we put out the music. It's a simple and effective way to A&R all the
music. Label mate 30 Hz is also on the bill. Can you say something about
why you chose James to join up with LOT49? Basically, he produces and DJs a sound that fits perfectly into what
we are doing here at LOT 49. He enjoys his work as we do and accepts any
input we may have. Who are your favorite DJs and/or producers at the moment? My favorite producer apart from the mainstay LOT 49 crew is Blende.
He is a guy from Sweden who Mark and I loved so much that we picked him
up straight away for the label. Your bio states that Dylan Rhymes was an homage to Bob Dylan. Meat
Katie found his name from a porn title. Your given name is Marvin
Beaver. Would you consider using Meat & Beaver for future collaborations
with Meat Katie? He-he! There's a massive humor element to what we do as we enjoy this
industry to the fullest, so in our minds anything goes. Watch this space
for Meaty Beaver!!! Meat Katie, Dylan Rhymes and 30HZ join Tolgar and Keith MacKenzie at
Sound-Bar, 226 West Ontario, (312)787-4480, on March 16 at 9pm. $20.
Rsvp to sound-bar.com for discounted admission.
