Tip of the Week
Sending the Four Star City to the Lone Star State

Tom Lynch

Hideout has constructed an insane one-day festival--built to benefit the local bands and artists bound for Austin's South by Southwest festival next week--that runs noon to midnight, for only ten bucks (first come first served, doors at 11am. See 411 for more). On the bill? OK...Catfish Haven, The Narrator, Judson Claiborne (of Low Skies), Tijuana Hercules, Josh Caterer, The Redwalls, The Prairie Cartel, The New Duncan Imperials, The Race, Maritime, Velcro Lewis and His 100 Proof Band, The Zincs, The M's, Office, Sybris and The 1900s, in that order, followed by a Life During Wartime dance party. All the acts are worth spending ten bucks to see alone--this is like one big heaping Thanksgiving dinner of Chicago rock `n' roll. And let us also take this moment to recognize, once more, how fucking awesome the Hideout and its people are. OK? Done.

All of these bands play March 10 at Hideout, 1354 West Wabansia, (773)227-4433, from noon-midnight. $10.

NONFICTION REVIEW
John Sellers' irritating, funny, beer-soaked, self-deprecating memoir of melody, "Perfect from Now On," his documented history of his personal relationship with indie rock--the book's subhead is "How Indie Rock Saved My Life"--is written in the spirit of Nick Hornby and is surely intended for already-groomed fans of the genre

School of the Art Institute instructor Beachy-Quick has already published three fine books of poetry--three works of art--most notably last year's "Mulberry" on Tupelo Press

Sea Dogs
Though she had been making music all her life, Assbring was never entirely satisfied with her creations, so she went back to basics, as it were, and wrote new songs, as El Perro Del Mar, with an emphasis on simplicity and honesty, putting all the chips on the table

Soundcheck
While "Living Well" sounds indeed like it could be an offshoot of a Pinback member, the bedroom-like recording quality--which oddly, somehow, lends itself to Crow's low-end hum of a voice and sometimes sudden attack of complicated guitar work--adds a more personal layer to the artist's delivery
