Good Spirits
Reiki Woman

Amy Rudberg

In a cozy room at Family Health Resources in Chicago's West Lakeview, Deanne Lozano works as an energy practitioner, helping to heal the body, mind and spirit. Deanne's small sanctuary contains a draped massage table, a colorful poster illustrating the body's chakras and triangular rattan shelving filled with crystals, candles and Tibetan religious objects. Deuter's meditative music plays quietly in the background and a hint of sage incense fills the room. Having worked as a factory worker, professional singer, insurance troubleshooter and caterer, Lozano has found her true calling as a certified master teacher and practitioner of Reiki (pronounced RAY-Key), a form of energy healing that literally means "universal life force energy."

If you had to explain Reiki to someone who didn't know anything about healing, how would you describe it?

I generally practice the most traditional form--Japanese Reiki. The thing [that all forms of Reiki have in common] is connecting to the divine and channeling that energy through you so that the client can receive as much of it as they need. It's very de-stressing, very calming for the client.

What happens at a client's first session of Reiki?

We first talk about what they're hoping to get out of [the session]. Before I even do that, I meditate on the person, trying to connect to their guides, seeing what it is that ... they need. The person then lies on the table and is fully clothed. I say a prayer. I place my hand on the crown (top of the head) and do a scan of their body to see what I can feel. I then do hand placements on their body.

How does spiritual well-being affect physical well-being?

I believe that our thoughts, our actions, the way we treat each other, and the way we treat ourselves affects our health. Everything in the universe is a part of who you are. If we looked at it that way and truly felt that way, we wouldn't be sick as much.

Do you have any last words?

I would say, whether or not it's Reiki, find a spiritual modality that you can connect to, something that will help you find greater peace in your life... and work with it.
