Dirty. Funky. Liquid. Heavy. Sinister. German superstar DJ Timo Maas'
name alone conjures up all sorts of slippery allusions to sounds and
feelings that are easier to feel than explain. In the height of the
progressive movement's millennium-era stranglehold on dancefloor
creativity, Timo Maas rose to prominence with massive club hits like
"Der Scheiber" and "Ubik," which might've carried a lot of the
sonic
weight of the club bangers of that time, but also contained unique
underlying funk rhythms to supplement their breaky, squiggly, tech-nasty
cores. But rhythms aside, Maas has seemed to develop an affinity for
high-profile vocal collaborations, with his most recent album (2005's
"Pictures") carrying Neneh Cherry, Placebo's Brian Molko and Kelis
(who also appeared pre-"Milkshake" on 2002's "Help Me") along for
Mr. Timo's wild ride--a ride that only get wilder when Maas attacks a
big nightclub like Crobar. The globetrotting veteran hulks over the
decks, running though his arsenal of bottom-heavy tracks with a keen
sense of when to make sounds go wonky. The progressive era that birthed
his initial success might be extinct, but with a prevalent tendency
towards the electro-break rhythms that seem to be sprouting up around
today's up-and-coming club-bangers, it should be interesting to see
what
Maas has been up to in his first Chicago appearance in two years. Timo Mass at Crobar, 1543 North Kingsbury, (312)266-1900, on December
