Tip of the Week
Drawn & Quarterly

Tom Lynch

Drawn & Quarterly presents a great night of graphic novelists discussing their work. Gabrielle Bell, author of "When I'm Old and Other Stories," among other things, found her greatest success in the "Lucky" series, which won her an Ignatz in 2003 for Most Outstanding Minicomic. D & Q is currently republishing the series, and her work is now often seen in Fantagraphics' "Mome" anthology (along with a slewful of other artists--I highly, highly recommend checking it out). Anders Nilsen's "Big Questions" series has gotten him some major attention, as did his first book, "The Ballad of the Two-Headed Boy." (Not to mention "Dogs and Water," my personal favorite of his, an ambient, open piece of lonely wandering and impending doom). "Don't Go Where I Can't Follow" is his most recently published. Kevin Huizenga is the only one originally from Chicago, and his "Supermonster" series has earned him support, plus, in 2001, he was named "Minimalism Cartoonist of the Year" by Comics Journal. "Curses," Huizenga's newest work, is out now.

Huizenga, Nilsen and Bell discuss their work December 7 at Quimby's, 1854 West North, (773)342-0940, at 7pm. Free.

Chicago bliss-popsters May or May Not released the "Bike" EP a few months ago, the band's follow-up to its promising full-length debut, "Colors Only Bees Can See." With musical ambitions that include horns, synths and a powerful china cymbal, "Bike" expanded on the band's slightly lo-fi, expressive sound, an improvement on the debut and a bubblegum dream

The bestselling Chicago author of "The Time Traveler's Wife" released the impossibly rich and enchanting "The Three Incestuous Sisters" last year, one of the best books delivered by a local author in 2005, a fever dream of Edward Gorey-like mischief and intrigue. Now comes "The Adventuress"

Born from the ocean of D.C. influences--like, well, Fugazi--plus classic rock, riff-heavy lords like Zeppelin or Black Sabbath, Dead Meadow has, simply put, become one of the most thrilling bands in the States
