Tip of the Week
The Comas & 1986

Tom Lynch

I adore The Comas' "Conductor," a love story told through the rise and fall of a great futuristic city, peppered with a beautiful space-rock sound that suits songwriter Andy Herod's voice so well. ("Falling," a solo, acoustic track on that record, is breathtaking.) While he waits for a set release date for The Comas' next record, Herod hits the road with 1986, whose "Nihilism is Nothing to Worry About"-- a funny title for a record, to be sure--is an all-out rock record from start to finish, filled with heavily distorted guitars and Screaming Trees-like Pacific Northwest rock `n' roll (this one's from Texas, however). Singer Giorgio Angelini hides his voice a bit behind some light-fuzz distortion, and while that would get annoying after a while with some bands, it works here, as it seems totally appropriate. A strong bill all around, it'll be neat to see these two promising bands share a night.

The Comas and 1986 play December 3 at Subterranean, 2011 West North, (773)278-6600, at 9pm. $7. (2006-11-28)
