The author and Northwestern University professor shouted against
monogamy, romance and relationships in general in "Against Love: A
Polemic," a searing, humorous study of sexual politics. Kipnis is back
with "The Female Thing: Dirt, Sex, Envy, Vulnerability," another
deliriously smart and sharply funny dissection of female identity, the
failure of man and the battle between feminism and femininity. Orgasms,
housework, the beauty industry and sexual vulnerability comprise the
major pieces of Kipnis' book. From the basic advertisement rules that
imply "women are inadequate" to issues involving rape and the reality
of sexual abuse, Kipnis, with history, psychology and her own personal
observations, winds up a short, striking punch to the gut of anyone who
has made up his--or her--mind on the state of gender relations. Laura Kipnis reads from "The Female Thing" November 1 at 57th
Street Books, 1301 East 57th, (773)684-1300, at 7pm. Free.
