Tip of the Week
Jimpster

Jenn Danko

Ben Watt calls Jimpster (aka Jamie Odell) a "future soul kingpin and bittersweet house don." His hybrid blend of deep and tech house run the gamut of gauzy and murky--while evoking a soulful essence. Jimpster's most recent U.S. release, "Amour," is his first full-length EP in four years. Debuting on his U.K.-based, Freerange Records label and released in the U.S. in September 2006, its thirteen-track play list samples all the right minimal, tech and deep-house flavors. Critical heavyweights including Swag, Jesse Rose and Deepchild have already crafted an "Amour" remix EP, while a second batch by Hipp-e, Dirt Crew and Ron Basejam is due up in coming months. In 2006, Jimpster's dark, electro remix of Chuck Love's "Livin at Night" seductively hushed an otherwise uptempo track. He knew exactly what he was doing. During his upcoming live set, listen for Jimpster to continue bridging such borders between tech and deep house. Did they ever really exist?

Jimpster, alongside Ron Trent and Jerome Derradji, stop in at Sonotheque, 1444 West Chicago, (312)226-7600, on November 1 from 9pm-2am. (2006-10-24)
