![]() Tip of the Week The Science of Sleep
(La science des reves) Michel Gondry's first writing-directing mashup,
"The Science of Sleep," is a gentle, leisurely, Paris-set shaggy-sheep
romantic comedy about dreams and prehensile romantic longings, with tiny
Latin heartthrob Gael Garcia-Bernal playing young Stephan, an
illustrator fixated on visions of apocalypse, fantasizing, awake and
asleep, of tall, lithe, plain-beautiful Charlotte Gainsbourg. Fans of
Gondry's videos will recognize a wealth of his gimmicks, tricks and
fixations, and welcome them in such giddy profusion. It's lovely, and an
interesting study in how it differs from the schema of Charlie Kaufman,
who wrote Gondry's two previous features, the sweet "Eternal Sunshine
of the Spotless Mind" and the dreadful "Human Nature." 105m. "The Science of Sleep" opens Friday.
