Tip of the Week
John Neff

Sarah Pearl

With a much more accessible presence in the ever-budding West Town Gallery Network, Western Exhibitions sounds off from its new locale on West Hubbard with a "studio view" of John Neff's current project, "Pornographic Pantograph with Allusion to Juan Cotan (In Progress, Patent Pending)." Since 2001, Neff has been busy recreating and modifying a centuries-old pantograph device used to replicate and rescale diagrams in his Grinell, Iowa studio. Neff's interpretation turns the process on its head by layering male homoerotic imagery sourced from web porn with technical drawings that result in gorgeously cold, lunar blue cyanotypes. A scaled-down version of his device, which is scheduled for completion in 2007, will be on view along with blueprints, other maquettes, patent application materials and three life-size sculptures of the artist.

John Neff shows at Western Exhibitions, 1821 West Hubbard, (312)307-4685, through October 21. (2006-09-12)
