![]() Tip of the Week Kehinde Wiley
L.A native Kehinde Wiley composes oil paintings featuring portraits of
powerful and confident-looking young African-American men filled with
backgrounds of vivid and gilded colors that sometimes flow into the
forefront. He depicts hip-hop culture juxtaposed with Baroque--old world
meets postmodern. Religious themes run rampant through his paintings.
With titles like St. Adrian and The Apostle Peter, these "saints"
typically brandish a weapon such as a gilded cross or staff. Wiley's
subtle references make his paintings bold and daring, such as depicting
his subjects wearing fashionable clothing merging street culture with
social and cultural statements. His "Columbus" exhibit ran in L.A this
summer and runs again in Columbus, Ohio for the rest of the year. Wiley
contributes six new works with similar subject matter and technique in
the exhibit entitled "Scenic" being shown at Rhona Hoffman Gallery.
Jaunty and aware, he continues to challenge new and old art forms. Kehinde Wiley shows at Rhona Hoffman Gallery, 3428 North Southport,
(773)281-2172, through October 1.
