The Chicago essayist and author who wrote the bestselling "Snobbery:
The American Version" in 2002 returns this month with "Friendship: An
Expose," an examination of the "art" of friendship, the different
categories friends fit inside and the natural course of friendly
relationships. Inevitably, Epstein falls back on his own personal
experiences with friends, with marriage, with "best friends"--he
evaluates the factors that affect the course of friendships and specific
factors that affected his own. In the hands of a lesser writer, this
sort of philosophic banter would be trite at best, but Epstein's
analysis--and, more importantly, his analysis of himself--leaps with
reserved fervor. Joseph Epstein discusses "Friendship: An Expose" at the Newberry
Library, 60 West Walton, (312)943-9090, at 6pm. Free.
