A member of seminal nineties techno phenoms Underworld, Darren Emerson
flies solo these days. Since leaving the band in 2000 (after seeing it
through musical highpoints such as "A Hundred Days Off,"
"Dubnobasswithmyheadman," "Everything" and "Beaucoup Fish," to
name only a few), Emerson pursued endeavors that have taken him well
beyond "Born Slippy," the group's contribution to the
"Trainspotting" soundtrack. He has been running his club and record
label under the name Underwater, in addition to producing epic dance
music. Most notably, his albums "GU: Singapore" and "Episode 1" have
scored big in clubworld, but arguably, anticipation for his upcoming
album has been generating the biggest buzz--and has had him
conspicuously absent. However, Emerson has managed to squeeze in two
stateside appearances this year, and Chicago's Spy Bar was lucky enough
to snag one of those slots. As a matter of fact, this Friday constitutes
his first Chicago appearance in four years, and holds no promise of
repeating itself any sooner. Darren Emerson performs, with John Curley at Future Sound Fridays at
Spy Bar, 646 North Franklin, (312)587-8779 on July 7 at 10pm-4am. $10
presale, $20 at the door, $10 before 11pm with rsvp to purefuture.com.
