Tip of the Week
MSTRKRFT

Duke Shin

This weekend kicks off the first of several music festivals with the Vice Records-curated Intonation Music Festival in Union Park. But for Chicagoans who take their music seriously, the weekend really gets started with the festival's official pre-party at Smart Bar. Headliners MSTRKRFT are critically hailed as hot-shit, party-rockin' remix-extraordinaires Jesse F. Keeler (the bass/synth playing half of hard-rocking duo Death From Above 1979) and DFA 1979 producer Al-P. While the duo has remixed such forward-thinking hyphen-rock acts like the Kills, Wolfmother, Bloc Party, and of course DFA 1979, they've also released one piece of Gallic-drenched disco-sleaze in the single "Easy Love," and have a debut artist album set to drop later this summer. Additional DJ sets from electro-funk provocateurs and fellow Intonation Fest talent Chromeo ("Needy Girl"), and local electric eclectics Jordan Z and Bald Eagle guarantee a fun night of disco bleeps, rawk fists, bootlegs and enough dance-party mania to make even the stuffiest neckerchief-wearer shake that Wrangler-wearin' ass.

MSTRKRFT performs at Smart Bar, 3730 North Clark, (773)549-0203 on June 23, 10pm-4am. $10 cover.

There you were a month ago, with your Ticketmaster printout, faded Violator concert t-shirt and blacker-than-black eyeliner. Then you got the phone call. David Gahan has laryngitis, and can't "Shake This Disease." Lucky for you, you won't have to try to "Enjoy the Silence" any longer

You'll have to forgive Melvin Oliphant (better known as Traxx) if he sounds a bit defensive when talking about his band, the Dirty Criminals
