The Artists of Intonation
A-Z spells two days of diverse sounds in Union Park

Tom Lynch

Annie
Scandinavian Annie's endlessly entertaining debut "Anniemal" is a pop gem full of swagger and style. (Sun 3:45pm)

Bill Dolan
A rare appearance by the guitarist behind Heroic Doses and 5ive Style, this time accompanied by Isotope 207's Matt Lux and Tortoise's John Herndon. (Sun 1:30pm)

Bloc Party
The post-punk party delivered a lasting debut with "Silent Alarm," garnering accolades from critics across the nation and shaking the asses of believers across the globe. (Sun 9:05pm)

Blue Cheer
The hard-rock architect plays its first Chicago show in more than two decades. (Sun 5:30pm)

Boredoms
One of the more sonically compelling acts at the festival, the Boredoms' noise-rock experimentation will either stun or alienate the crowds. (Sat 6:55pm)

Chromeo
Two-man love funk that fuses synths, drum machines and hip-hop sensibility. (Sat 3:50pm)

Constantines
Toronto unit Constantines mixes heavy rock with dub, a bit of soul, a bit of punk. "Tournament of Hearts," the band's third release on Sub Pop, is its best yet. (Sun 2:30pm)

dead prez
Emcees M-1 and stic.man's "Let's Get Free" and "RBG: Revolutionary but Gangsta" mix hip-hop with soul, reggae and blues to make two of the most memorable hip-hop records of the last decade. (Sun 8:15pm)

Devin the Dude
Houston rapper emphasizes comedy in his work; underground for some time, he first broke through while working with Dr. Dre, and then with his own record, "Just Tryin' Ta Live." (Sat 2:30pm)

Erase Errata
The all-female Bay Area four-piece embraces chaos with its jagged, cutthroat rock. (Sat 1:30pm)

Favourite Sons
Though without a full-length to speak of, New York City's Favourite Sons play dirty, distorted rock `n' fucking roll. The record, on Vice, drops in September. (Sat 1pm)

Ghostface
The pioneer of innovative hip-hop showcases some of his MF Doom-produced "Fish Scale." (Sat 7:50pm)

High on Fire
The metal trio force-feeds doom down the throats of howling fans--the Slayer-like riffing makes it all worthwhile. (Sat 4:35pm)

Jon Brion
An astonishing musician and producer--he co-produced Kanye's "Late Registration," as well as scored films "Magnolia," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "Punch-Drunk Love"--Brion's outing "Meaningless" proves he's one of the most innovatory pop minds in music today. (Sun 6:15pm)

Jose Gonzalez
Another Scandinavian entry, Gonzalez's acoustic-based pop invokes the great Nick Drake. (Sat 3:10pm)

Lady Sovereign
Britain's dynamic Lady Sov delivers her head-kick brand of hip-hop, a sensation in both the UK and the States. (Sat 8:45pm)

Lupe Fiasco
The Chicago native's "Food & Liquor" looks to propel him high in the ranks of Chicago hip-hip innovators--his single "Kick, Push," dedicated to skateboarding, will help him get there. (Sun 4:20pm)

90 Day Men
The Chicago art-rock unit has only played a handful of shows in the last couple years--better catch them now before the band disappears completely. (Sat 2pm)

Panthers
Deadly hardcore with a political edge--Panthers will get your blood boiling. (Sun 2pm)

Rhymefest
See Feature. (Sun 3:10pm)

Robert Pollard
The Guided by Voices frontman went solo last year with "From a Compound Eye," a fine start to a second career. (Sun 7:15pm)

Roky Erickson
The leader of the legendary and highly influential sixties psych band The 13th Floor Elevators returns after years and years of tragic absence. (Sat 6:05pm)

The Stills
The Montreal hipster-core band stunned with the dark and melodic "Logic Will Break Your Heart" a couple years ago; the new one, "Without Feathers," has a lighter approach, but you can tell the demon is still stirring. (Sat 5:20pm)

The Streets
See Feature. (Sat 9:20pm)

The Sword
The punishing metal and face-tearing guitar may be a little too much for some, but just right for others. (Sun 4:55pm)

Tyrades
Chicago thrashers Tyrades, with their riot grrl, screaming mayhem, use melodic tumult to advantage. (Sun 1pm)
