The Agony and the Ecstasy
Peeps

Fred Sasaki

Characters:

Auden: A Chicago literary type. He looks like a postmodern Beatle.

Florida: A Chicago Miami type. She is a shapely Dove bar.

Ezra: A Williamsburg philosophy type. He looks like a pre-historic science fiction hero. He is offstage the entire scene, in New York City.

Scene: All of the action takes place in an Uptown, Chicago condo.

Auden is watching "Capote" on a twenty-inch Sony TV that is set on Pottery Barn entertainment shelves. His wife is knitting, somewhat nervously. They are sitting together on a cranberry-colored Pottery Barn sofa, behind them a carefully curated array of toddler toys. A cell phone rings the hi-fi ringer of "I Put a Spell on You." Auden looks at the cell phone's face and answers.

Auden: Ezra.

Ezra: I'm on top of my apartment building and I'm looking and... two people are having sex about twenty feet from me.

Auden: What? They're having sex?

Florida: What? Who's having sex? (She knits faster, a little agitated.)

Auden: (He puts the phone to his shoulder.) No, Ezra is on the roof.

Florida: He's having sex on the roof?

Auden: Hold on. [Auden presses pause on the remote, puts two fingers to his lips in a smoking motion, Florida nods, he kisses her, walks to their northern sunroom/office, and sits at his Pottery Barn Aris Small Desk.] Hold on, what? You're on the roof?

Ezra: Yes, I'm on the roof of my apartment building and I can see two people having sex. It's like they're right there.

Auden: On the roof?

Ezra: No, in the apartment building next to mine. They're just... having sex. I can see them through their window and I can't stop looking at them. I thought, I have to stop looking at them. Then I thought, I should call Auden. Wow, she has really nice legs.

Auden: What do they look like? How old are they?

Ezra: It's hard to tell much about them except that they're fucking. He's really disheveled. She's got her legs totally up and he's thrusting really slow. Why is he going so slow? I think he's trying to avoid coming. But wait, her pelvis is gyrating; there is a lot of movement on her end. Oh yeah, she is really twisting her hips. These two really know what they're doing. I just can't stop watching them. Oh my god, how long can they do this? I came up here with some whisky and cigarettes and was going to call you. Then I saw them and thought, OK, there are people having sex over there and I can just... ignore it. But, no, I can't. I can't stop watching them. Oh wait, now he's going really fast. He's really going hard. Wait, I think their window is open. Maybe they can hear me. Should I yell something? What could I possibly say? Oh shit. No, wait... I think they saw me. Oh no. Wait, it's OK. No... they just changed positions. Oh yes, this must be the final stretch.

Auden: What does their place look like?

Ezra: It's a mess. I don't understand how people can live like that, like they're part of the Garment District or something. There is musical equipment everywhere. Oh wait, he's getting up. Oh, OK. They're done. He's, wait, walking away. He's just walking away. That's it? He's just walking away? No, wait. They switched positions again. Oh my, what? This guy's dick must be huge. He's taking really, really long thrusts. I don't see how that's possible. Now she's got her legs wrapped around him. Oh yes, she's got her legs wrapped really tight around his ass. I think they're really going for it now. My god, how long can they do this?

Auden: How long have you been watching them?

Ezra: Umm... just a few minutes before I called you.

Auden: What are they doing now?

Ezra: Oh... oh, oh... wait. OK, wait. Oh, yeah. He's done. He's done. He's definitely done. There is some shaking. I don't know if there is going to be a lot of cuddling. I don't think they do cuddling. It's like, that's it. Oh, wait. Oh my god. What the fuck is going on? Oh, yes. Oh yes. Yes. She's going down on him. Oh. Oh, no. There's cuddling. They're just sitting now. I think they're sitting Indian style, very close. Oh shit! I think I just caught a glimpse of his dick and it looked fucking huge. And she was just sucking on it just a little bit. Like a goodnight kiss. I think he's stroking her now. Now they're just talking.

The Parade of Summer
Decapitated heads of tulips lay splayed over decorative beds along Michigan Avenue as spring turns. The summer wind brings in a thrush of color in the teaming multitude of strangers on the Magnificent Mile. Immense in scope, the classification of the species that take the promenade is far beyond the means of a mere article. Such an endeavor demands a Jacques-Cousteau-like depth and a heavy prescription of Xanax. This being my only caveat, I give you a tasting blanket of the more peculiar anamules on parade, from bulbous suburbanites and tourists to the lean and harrowed hags of the avenue
