Tip of the Week
Withinsight

Michael Weinstein

Among the twelve gifted photographers here who represent genres ranging from the geometrical abstraction to the sentimental portrait--with a host of others in between--several break with the Center's informal traditions and make erotica their theme. Tom Cantos allows himself the luxury of taking intimate pleasures in photography; we see him lying on a bed fully clothed with a soft smile of transcendent bliss on his face as he gently clutches a willowy woman's black-stockinged leg reposing across his stomach. Dave Klotz shows us who Cantos' lady friend might be in his series of portraits featuring bondage-and-domination queens who present themselves with the studied insouciance of fashion models. His banner shot of S'Kate hones in on the seductive narrow space between her slightly spread naked thighs, to which our eyes are led by the web of her fishnet stockings. Or maybe Cantos' honey is one of Julie Sielaff's steamy vamps applying lipstick or sitting tall with her front to the back of a chair.

Withinsight shows at the Chicago Photography Center, 3301 North Lincoln, (773)549-1631, through July 1.

As scientific instruments penetrate ever deeper into matter, photography proceeds apace, capturing the dizzyingly complex worlds with their ragged geometries that appear at vanishing points in space within split seconds
