Tip of the Week
Hip Lit Fair

Tom Lynch

This weekend the Museum of Contemporary Art celebrates its current Chris Ware exhibition with a day of independently published lit, which they call the Hip Lit Fair. The event features readings, signings and shopping, all curated by the MCA and Quimby's Bookstore. Terence Hannum starts the afternoon with a presentation of his "The Future Belongs to Ghosts" zine, a combination of Hannum's drawings and musicians' essays. Also appearing are Sally Alatalo, founder of Sara Ranchouse Publishing, whose work includes both printed and performance art, and Kevin Riordan, who self-publishes his Stare Magazine and other artist books. To top it off is an appearance by Punk Planet magazine editor Anne Elizabeth Moore, who publishes a zine called "AnneZine," written by and about other people in the world named Anne. A nice look at Chicago-based underground publishing, the Hip Lit Fair, along with the Ware exhibition, is a fine way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

The Hip Lit Fair occurs May 20 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 East Chicago, (312)280-2660, at noon.
