Tip of the Week
Super Meego Soundsystem

Brad Knutson

After countless DJ sets around town and a sold-out headlining gig last month at the Empty Bottle, local funky electronica outfit Walter Meego reemerges this week in a brand new incarnation dubbed "Super Meego Soundsystem." Combining the performance aspect of its live show with the seamless flow of its DJ sets, the Meego Soundsystem will mix, edit and loop tracks on the fly via a wired mix of turntables, laptops and effects. Drawing from a deep cache of records and samples, the band will essentially create an endless string of live mash-ups lasting the entire night. With a nonstop barrage of varying musical styles interspersed with countless pop-culture snippets, this show should appeal to everyone from the crate-hunting record geek to the most ADD-prone club-goer. Milwaukee post-crunksters Chocolate Gamma open. Walter Meego's latest single, "Hollywood," is out now on Brilliante Records.

Super Meego Soundsystem performs with Chocolate Gamma, Brenmar Someday and resident DJs Tobias and Brock at Darkroom, 2210 West Chicago, (773)276-1411 on May 18, 10pm-2am. $5 cover. (2006-05-16)

Spin Control
When DJs are booked to play Smart Bar, most are generally content to spin for an hour or two. This isn't nearly enough time for England's Mr. Scruff, however

Tip of the Week
With the tragic death of longtime keyboardist/vocalist Mary Hansen in 2002, the divorce of founding members Laetitia Sadier and Tim Gane earlier that year, and the release of a career-spanning CD/DVD box-set, "Oscillions from the Anti-Son," in 2005, you might guess that prolific lounge-popsters Stereolab would soon be packing up the synthesizers and drum machines at its space-age bachelor pad
