Mothers Who Rock
Cinco de Mama draws a crowd

Kate Puhala

Two small children fancifully run into the Beat Kitchen--an odd occurrence on any other day given that it's a bar--but not on Cinco de Mama, an evening of moms performing with their rock bands. As part of Mamapalooza, a national endeavor to support mothers in the arts, these little buggers are able to run freely around the concert venue--without big black X's on both their hands--only stopping for an occasional refill of their sippy cups to throw one back for mommy.

"It's all about finding a balance between doing what you love, celebrating what you do as an artist and as a mom," says mother-of-five Dolly McCarthy, the event's co-coordinator.

"Women in rock don't receive recognition from the record industry," says Robin Thrasher, one of the performers. "They're expected to be pop stars at seventeen. This gives grown women the opportunity to perform and showcase what they love."

Emcee and slam poetry diva-mama C.C. Carter fills the set changes with lullabies and poems about her son. "This is a crayon," she says sternly. "It is only used on paper. Not on walls or as food!"

The crowd roars. "You go mama!" someone yells.

On the way out, the merch table offers black "Moms Rock" T-shirts for sale. A Mother's Day gift, even if your mom isn't in a band? "It's never too late," McCarthy winks.
