Tip of the Week
Secret Cities

Michael Weinstein

Some of the most evocative architectural photography--and that is not a contradiction in terms--is on display in this group show of seven straight black-and-white practitioners who translate their stolid subjects into instigators of emotion. Taking approaches running the gamut from emphasis on detail to panorama, the contributors are united in carrying their different styles to the zenith of intensity. Among this gifted group, Christophe Valsecchi stands out for the originality of his vision and the complex sentiments that it engenders. Through sensitivity to light and perspective, Valsecchi is able to transmute iconic structures into surreal scenarios, as when the futuristic pyramid at the Louvre appears illuminated behind a monstrous stone gargoyle's head with its mouth agape. As we look at pedestrians who are tiny as ants dotting the plaza in front of the pyramid, our gaze returns to the gargoyle, which loses its terror and seems to emit a cry of agony at his loneliness and abandonment.

"Secret Cities" shows at Architech, 730 North Franklin, (312)475-1290, through June 17.

Known for his black-and-white photo-documentary series "The Age of Adolescence" that captured the street life of blue-collar teenagers in the twilight of the rock 'n' roll era--right before rock was born in the British invasion--Joe Sterling also delved deeply into the photography of sensibility in shadowy existential studies of industrial life that reveal the brutal beauty backgrounding the first burst of youth culture
