Tip of the Week
Soul System Live

Duke Shin

Soul System's sonic solution of smooth beats and live performance is gaining it a steady fan base around the Midwest and beyond. Featuring live keys, sax and vocals, this Fox Valley, Wisconsin-based band garners high praise and comparisons to other live beat outfits like Tortured Soul. Recent changes for the band include adding the raw-yet-sultry vocals of Chicago-based Lailah and trading its turntable-based rhythms for Ableton Live sequencing software. Following suit with bands like the New Deal, Greenskeepers and the aforementioned Tortured Soul, Soul System is at long last putting a face to otherwise faceless DJ music. Catch its return performance at the intimate setting of Wicker Park's Small Bar and you'll also be treated to a DJ set from local house heavy and Epiphic roster-mate Karl Almaria.

Soul System performs at Small Bar, 2049 West Division, (773)772-2727 on April 27. (2006-04-25)
