Boutiqueville
Spring 2006
What a stylish few months it's been since we last visited
Boutiqueville. Bucktown has blown up with new shops, Gen Art's Shop
Chicago drew over 1,500 folks to Union Hall to celebrate local fashion
and even the most jaded New Yorkers--we're talking head honchos of Vogue
and the New York Times--couldn't resist jetting out to Chicago to attend
the fifth-anniversary party for Ikram Goldman's eponymous boutique.
Needless to say, as the time comes for us to service our closets with
a little spring cleaning, we wouldn't shop in any other city. Sure, it's
hard to think frilly skirts and skimpy tanks in our city's version of
April (read: 40-degree-day surprises) but the boutiques that make up our
Ville just can't be found elsewhere. We scouted out stores where men can
play foosball while stocking up on designer jeans; we've got intel on a
spot that sells over 1,000 pairs of cowboy boots; we know a place where
you can order up a t-shirt with a side of chips. But as diverse as these
boutiques are, they've got a few things in common: they're independent,
locally owned and emphatically Chicago. People of the Second City: These
stores are all yours, so rack up with your credit-card bills with pride.
See you in Boutiqueville!
--Jennifer Berg Boutiqueville was written by Jennifer Berg, Andrea Kasprzak, Amy
Mujtaba and Joanna Topor Be sure to check out what the boutiques have to say about the "Big Thing for
Spring" Chicago's boutiques tend to cluster in pedestrian-friendly shopping
districts, so we've organized Boutiqueville along those lines, even when
that means placing stores in sections other than their true
neighborhoods. Just don't tell the cartographers.

The red awnings taking over North Avenue belong to super-mini-chain
Akira. The clothing and accessory empire, founded by three
fashion-forward friends from Champagne, began with a single women's
store in 2002. Since then, it has grown to include a men's store, an
accessories shop and a shoe boutique, but the young and trendy aesthetic
(along with Akira's impossible-to-beat price points) have remained the
same. This spring, check out new pieces in Akira's famous denim
selection: sexily embellished styles for men and women come from
LA-based line Monarchy (most pairs go for about $196). The accessories
store is blowing up with designer sunglasses (think Gucci, Prada and
YSL) and the women's shoe store is packed with wedges, the season's "it"
shoe. (W/M/WS/MS)
Apartment Number 9
1804 N. Damen (773)395-2999
Owned by sisters who like their boys hip, Apartment Number 9 stocks
an array of hard-to-find clothing and accessories for men. Displays of
stones and daisies, a clean, organized array of merchandise and the
friendly, laid-back staff give the store a decidedly Zen vibe. Customers
with classic taste hone in on shirts by Etro and Seize sur Vingt while
the more casual lad stocks up on tees by Josh Podole ($56) and jeans
from Paper Denim & Cloth. A selection of "crossover" merchandise (read:
not too shabby, not too chic) includes cashmere sweaters from Inhabit
($357) and stylish separates from Generra. This spring, check out a
navy-and-white-striped seersucker suit from Nicole Farhi and pieces from
Martin Margiela, an Apartment Number 9 exclusive line. (M)
City Soles/Niche
2001 W. North (773)489-2001
citysoles.com
This Wicker Park stalwart is famous for a mix of funky and high-end
kicks: The side of the store called "Niche" (closest to the Damen L
stop) veers toward the upper-crust while the "City Soles" side provides
footwear suited for the urban sidewalk. No matter what side you shop on,
the store is all friendly service and at-home decor: couches,
magazine-strewn coffee tables and an in-house Chihuahua set the stage
for some intensive accessorizing. Represented shoe lines include Blay,
Isabella Fiore, Camper, Costume National and Tsubo. This spring, Niche
is outfitting city dwellers in handcrafted cowboy boots by Old Gringo;
exquisitely detailed styles include the Elvis boot ($650) adorned with a
blue snakeskin rising-phoenix pattern. (WS/MS)
Daffodil Hill
1659 N. Damen (773)489-0101
The cute-as-could-be Daffodil Hill channels girly glam with crystal
chandeliers, powder-pink walls, the scent of floral candles and
feel-good pop tunes on the speakers. Merchandise is mostly clothing and
accessories for ultra-feminine femmes, but there are sections for baby
gifts, bath and body products and antique-looking home items (think rose
wall hooks and enamel desk caddies). This spring, look for Capri jeans
by Bella Dahl ($148), ruffled peach tops from Kenzie ($68) and pink mesh
tank tops from Weston Wear ($84). 525 America's white sweater jacket
with pearl buttons ($178) is the ultimate prim spring staple.
Along-for-the-ride dudes get a nod with a small selection of men's
shirts. (W/M)
D. Marie Boutique
1867 N. Damen (773)489-3220
D. Marie offers up a wide array of women's bags, accessories and
casual clothing. The sunny shop presents merchandise in a friendly,
uncluttered environment, but the most pleasant aspect of the shop just
may be its price tags: most of the stylish purses, bags and clutches
ring in at about $150. (That's a few zeros shaved off prices on
similar-looking bags sold up and down the Miracle Mile.) This spring,
look for slouchy, oversized silver bags, basic black purses and
tropical-hued clutches ($60). Accessories include cuffs decked out in
green sequins ($14) and necklaces with chunky turquoise beads ($90). The
clothing selection features jeans by David Kahn. (W)
G Boutique
2131 N. Damen (773)235-1234
boutiqueg.com
At this store for the mature customer (you must be 18 to shop here),
a long red hallway whisks shoppers back to an ornate pleasure den in
which blushes and giggles may be provoked. Literature includes titles
like "Guide to Getting it On" and "Down and Dirty Secrets"; there are
game boards like Kinky Bingo ($20), a section reserved for anal toys and
penis-shaped candy necklaces. The store's best seller is the famous
G-Swirl; ask the staff for an X-rated description of why the toy sells
so well. But in all this naughty, there's plenty of nice: a large
selection of lingerie includes prim and proper pieces by Aubade, and
there's nothing adult about Karen Neuburger slipper socks ($22). (W/M)
Gem
1710 N. Damen (773)384-7700
gemchicago.com
This pint-sized jewelry boutique showcases owner Laura Kitsos'
collection of ethereal gems against a canvas of dainty robin's-egg-blue
walls. Kitsos' own creations are displayed alongside designs from local
and non-local artists. Most of the store's pieces are hand-crafted and
jewelry sparkles with precious and semi-precious stones in a dazzling
array of colors. A wide array of merchandise reflects a similarly wide
price range, and shoppers can bedazzle for anywhere from $22-$3,500.
This spring, check out Gem's stunning diamond-and-citrine necklace with
a pearl-encrusted gold chain ($3,500) and Laura's ocean-hued prehnite
lariat ($68.) (W)
Hejfina
1529 N. Milwaukee (773)772-0002
hejfina.com
This swanky boutique carries modern clothing and accessories for men
and women. The store is open, spacious and art-focused (a collection of
art books for sale includes Gombrich's "The Story of Art") and the same
can be said of owner Heiji Choy's sartorial selection. Designs for men
represent hip designers like Kenzo Minami and Band of Outsiders while
women's clothing is by designers like Alexander Herchcovitch, Vena Cava
and Alice Ritter. This spring, check out a ruffle-necked, plaid dress by
Alexander Herchcovitch ($508) ("so cute and Becky Thatcher," one staffer
aptly notes), necklaces of resin and cotton jersey from Trosman ($97)
and exquisitely tailored designs from of-the-moment men's line Cloak.
(W/M/WS/MS)
Helen Yi
1645 N. Damen (773)252-3838
helenyi.com
Helen Yi's sleek black-and-white space provides a gallery-like
setting for top-of-the-line threads. However, the friendly staff is
quick to dispel any fancy-store fright and will gladly walk you through
a designer collection that includes pieces straight off the pages of
Harpers Bazaar. This spring, check out Erin Fetherston's black bubble
dress with a chiffon skirt ($715) before the folks from New York steal
it away: Helen Yi is the only store in the country to carry this
perfect-for-parties number, and phones have been ringing off the hook.
Other spring standouts include Barbara Bui's lamé trousers ($904), B.
Romanek's crocodile clutch ($1,865) and a rope and tassel necklace from
Fenton ($334). (W)
Him
1653 N. Damen (773)235-3360
Him makes shopping comfortable for boutique-wary men with an
awesome-looking motorcycle in the window, a foosball table, a vintage
pinball machine and a cooler of beer up front. The merchandise is just
as hip and masculine as the décor, with an array of men's clothing and
accessories that includes Joystick tees, jackets by Artine, denim by
Rock and Republic and funky cuff links by local artist Tracey Mayer.
This spring, check out a new shipment of rockin' shades from Gucci and
Marc Jacobs. Tailored dress shirts by English Laundry ($75) have
cufflinks bearing the English flag and Rufus' pink herringbone button-up
($190) is a perfectly springy shade of coral. (M)
Hot Pink
1464 N. Milwaukee (773)227-7477
shophotpink.com
This open-till-ten source for girl's "going-out" gear (anything
flirty and frilly) has a décor that lives up to the store's perky name.
The blushing color that floods the two-level space, along with girly
parties like the monthly "Martinis in Pink," would make Barbie feel
right at home. This spring, stock up on a pleated black satin and lace
skirt with a beaded waist ($74), teal skirts with silver embroidery,
peach baby-doll tops ($58) and floral corsets ($28). The denim selection
includes styles by Red Engine. Upstairs, look for a wide assortment of
glitzy clutches and handbags, most under $40. (W)
Jade
1557 N. Milwaukee (773)324-5233
jadechicago.com
This Wicker Park shop exudes a soothing, upscale vibe with jade
green walls and cherry wood floors. Decorations include artful
arrangements of twisted branches and an antique Asian altarpiece behind
the cash register. Former stylist Laura Haberman stocks her women's
boutique with innovative designs from established and up-and-coming
designers: M Missoni, Olga Kapustina and Nieves Lavi are all
represented. This spring, stock up on soft, blousy tunic tops by T Bags
($150), Lotta's latte-hued beaded chiffon top ($275), short shorts by
Geren Ford ($150) and Mara Hoffman's halter dress with a funky green
leaf pattern ($345). Well-edited accessories include Jasseo's leather
bags and lacy jewelry designs from local artist Kristen Amato. (W/WS)
Jolie Joli
1623 N. Damen (773)342-7272
joliejoli.com
Jolie Joli's tasteful, subtle décor (think wooden floors, exposed
brick walls and curvy lanterns) perfectly sets off the store's
bohemian-chic collection of clothing and accessories for men and women.
Jolie Joli represents an international array of designers with pieces
imported from California, France and Italy. This spring, look for
sparkly brown ballet flats ($145) and delicate chiffon-and-silk
separates by Ambre Babzoe, floral-print, burgundy tunics by Rozae
Nichols ($265) and Wyeth's incandescent olive chiffon dress with beaded
straps ($500). Silky, breezy tops and dresses by young designer Isabel
Marant are spring standouts. Men's selections include Crosby Hallen &
Cobb's intricately detailed, subtly striped blazers ($370) and dress
shirts from Ted Baker. (W/M)
Language
1537 N. Milwaukee (773)772-5744
language-chicago.com
Opened in late March 2006, Language is one of the newest buds on the
ever-blossoming stretch of Milwaukee Avenue boutiques. Owner Natalie
Barber decorated her sleek women's store with simple black, white and
silver decor so that her collection of hard-to-find designs can take
center stage. The effervescent Barber loves helping customers find
different ways to wear a piece; this spring, check out a sapphire-blue
three-layer piece by Ama ($265) that can be worn as a skirt or a dress.
Victorian-style, silky peach blouses by Sunner ($275) can be worn alone
or "toughened up" with Ama's leather corset belt ($165). Barber reps
several designers previously unseen in Chicago: look for feminine pieces
by NY-based Debra Rodman or Ilana Moses. (W)
Ms. Catwalk
2042 N. Damen (773)235-2750
mscatwalk.com
The blue, pink and white striped walls of Ms. Catwalk make the store
feel like a prettily wrapped birthday gift. Owner Michon Stuttley sells
clothing and accessories for females of the young, hip and
always-ready-to-party persuasion. Sequins can be found on bags, inside
the hoods of sweatshirts and splashed across funky accessories. This
spring, look for puffy skirts galore: there are stripes and ruffles from
Sugar Lips ($54) and bubble skirts with sewn-on coins ($58). Springy
jackets include a cute seersucker number with green and white stripes
($48) and a ribbon-tie white jacket made of eyelet lace ($68). (W)
Ooh La La
1872 N. Damen (773)489-5252
Owned by Tiffany Norrington, the bright-color-loving vixen behind
iCandy, Ooh La La beckons shoppers with a swooping pink curtain at its
entrance. Inside, flamingo-pink and swimming-pool blue walls give the
space a Miami Beach feel. Gigantic paper flowers add peppy cheer and
mannequins in stylish shades and eye-popping dresses look right at home.
This spring, exclaim ooh la la over pale blue sequin shrugs ($88), long,
studded wife beaters ($62), chandelier-print tees from Smashing Grandpa
Rock Couture and soft, loosely draped tank tops with sewn-on coins
($68). Denim includes jeans from Oprah-favorite line Pure. Extra goodies
feature glittery hobo bags, dangly earrings and sweet-smelling Lumiere
candles and handmade soaps from Body Food by Mim. (W)
P.45
1643 N. Damen (773)862-4523
p45.com
Open since 1997, P.45 was one of the first boutiques in Bucktown's
now-booming retail scene. The women's store features faux stone floors,
exposed brick walls and wave-like, frosted glass fixtures in its modern
and inviting design. The insanely nice salesgirls navigate customers
through clothing and accessories by hip, fresh designers: shoppers scoop
up sophisticated but funky separates from Alex Gaines, feminine dresses
from Samantha Treacy and dainty jewelry designs from local artists like
Sarah McGuire and Winifred Grace. This spring, Laila Azhar's bubble-hem
dress ($318) with a lace-up, satin ribbon back makes a white-hot
cocktail number; Lauren Moffat's sunset dress ($338), made of linen in
sparkly shades of coral and mango, is perfect for beginning-of-summer
getaways. (W/WS)
Raizy
1944 N. Damen (773)227-2221
shopraizy.com
Renee Gertzfeld named her Bucktown boutique after the Hebrew word
for petal. Indeed, shopping at the boudoir-like Raizy feels like
stepping inside a giant rose: the walls are petal pink and an assortment
of high-end candles send an exotic scent throughout the boutique. The
shop stocks gossamer-light, sorbet-hued lingerie from Italy, Canada,
France and America. Lines exclusive to Raizy include London's Damaris
and Paris's Fifi Chachnil. This spring, check out lace-trimmed,
candy-colored, low-rise boy shorts by Love Tanjane ($30) and Samantha
Chang's purple silk and yellow lace camisole set ($265). The
hundred-hour candle by Voluspa ($30) makes a sweet-smelling gift; when
lit, it sends a golden gleam throughout the room. (W)
Red Eye Eyewear
1869 N. Damen (773)782-1660
redeyeoptical.com
Open since 2002, Red Eye Eyewear is committed to helping Chicago see
clearly. The boutique, owned by a doctor who specializes in ocular
disease, provides on-site eye exams so customers can find the perfect
glasses and contact lenses. While the doctor's at it, he'll make sure
you're clear of glaucoma. Contemporary frames come from Denmark's Eye
Eye, Dolabany, Paris' Plume, Steve Madden and DKNY. This spring, check
out a range of new styles ("we've got everything from extreme to
subtle," one staffer says) from London-based Jai Kudo. Sunglasses come
from Dolce and Gabbana, Ray-Ban and Armani. Prices for stylin' vision
reflect a wide range, with glasses going for anywhere from $85-$305.
(M/W)
Robin Richman
2108 N. Damen (773)278-6150
A gigantic tumbleweed hangs outside the entrance to Robin Richman's
store. Inside, expect charming, country-home touches: there are
yarn-covered hangers and an in-house calico cat. Richman herself can be
found sipping tea and chatting with customers, but this is one high-end
tea party. The surprisingly spacious shop stocks men's and women's
clothing and accessories from rarely seen international designers.
Merchandise comes from Paris, Japan and Robin's own hand; antique charm
and high-end, quirky detail are rote. This spring, look for ruffled,
silver heels by Chie Mihara ($220), perfect-for-layering cropped shirts
by Marc le Bihan and a men's linen-burlap jacket spruced up with leather
and gold chains by Japanese designer Share Spirit ($1,095). (W/M/WS/MS)
Saffron
2064 N. Damen (773)486-7753
saffronchicago.com
Referred to as an "urban sanctuary," Saffron has been cozying up
Damen Avenue since 1997. The boutique feels like an idyllic country home
in Italy or France: Owner Padmaja Manerikar Maryanski plays a soundtrack
of moody jazz and heartbreaking opera, jasmine-and-brown-sugar candle
pots ($23) sweeten up the air and tea towels are displayed in drawers of
antique furniture. Aside from dainty gifts and goodies for the home,
Saffron sells elegant clothing from lines like Saja. This spring, look
for Saja's pale blue linen jacket with vintage glass buttons ($238),
shimmering sun hats from Italian line Grevi ($69.50) and sophisticated
sportswear from G1. (W)
Saint Alfred
1531 N. Milwaukee (773)486-7159
stalfred.com
Saint Alfred offers limited-edition kicks that will send the
young-at-heart, surfer/skater kind of guy into spasms of sneaker
euphoria. That is, if the boyish shopper has a grown man's bank account:
because of the rare nature of Saint Alfred's merchandise, prices in the
store start at $50 and climb up to $3,000 for the Nike Dunk shoe made in
Paris (only fifty pairs were originally made, a mere ten pairs are
left). Despite the work-of-art merchandise, the small store remains
laid-back with friendly help and rockin' tunes. This spring, dress like
Mike in the Jordan IIII limited-edition sneaker ($135) or stock up on
springy styles from Adidas or Visvim. A collection of tees includes
designs by Stussy and Bittersweet. (MS)
Silver Moon
1755 W. North (773)235-5797
silvermoonvintage.com
Owned by Aerosmith-stylist Liz Meyer, Silver Moon houses a mix of
new and vintage pieces for men and women. "We want to help people
incorporate unique or vintage pieces into modern wardrobes," Meyer says.
New pieces include floral corsets from queen-of-funk Vivienne Westwood
($390) while the vintage collection emphasizes cocktail and evening
gowns from the twenties, thirties and sixties. This spring, check out
one of Liz's favorite pieces: a peach floral chiffon dress with a ruffle
trim from the 1920s ($300). Other hard-to-pass-up selections include
turn-of-the-century petticoats in white eyelet lace ($50) and a black
1950s gown with silver beading ($160). The men's selection includes
funky cuff links, army jackets and turn-of-the century waistcoats. (W/M)
The Silver Room
1442 N. Milwaukee (773)278-7130
thesilverroom.com
Along with a large selection of accessories for both sexes, Silver
Room boasts some stay-awhile temptations for customers: the spacious
store contains magazine racks, a photo booth, gumball machines and a
lounge in back where a live DJ often spins. This spring, accessorize
with colorful, geometric necklaces from local designer Sherzada ($65),
psychedelic, unisex rings from Canadian line Imooi ($40) and an array of
oversized sunglasses. Kendra Lockhart, the store's in-house wedding-ring
designer, creates untraditional pieces beautiful enough to make "grown
men cry," one staffer says. (W/M)
Stitch
1723 N. Damen (773)782-1570
stitchchicago.com
This Bucktown shop is best known for carrying the crème de la crème
from the world of home furnishings: Italian leather bed frames ($2,600)
and architectural, stainless steel floor lamps ($425) are truly like
living-room couture. It turns out that Stitch also houses a deliciously
dapper collection of accessories for men, women and the most fashionable
"wee ones" on the playground. Like the store's furniture assortment,
Stitch's accessory collection focuses on handcrafted detail and
high-quality materials. This spring, check out handmade, hammered silver
jewelry designs from Adina, rose-colored Italian sunglasses from Giorgio
Nannini ($25) and whip-stitched, leather watches handmade by Dean
($102). (M/W)
Tangerine
1719 N. Damen (773)772-0505
Rustic touches in Tangerine's décor include clothing racks decorated
with metal-sculpted twigs. The store's clothing and accessories for
women boast whimsical, vintage-inspired details. This spring, a nautical
theme drifts through soft sailboat-print tees from Puella, ($83-$87),
Saltwater's yacht-print, cap-sleeve top ($149) and a pleated,
seagull-pattern skirt in blue and white ($188). Feminine, softly colored
dresses by Nanette Lepore and Mint are what staffers call "perfect for
tea parties." Other spring sensations include short shorts by Johnson
($184), long beaded necklaces and Erica Tanov's embroidered Fiesta Skirt
($408). (W/S)
T-shirt Deli
1739 N. Damen (773)276-6266
tshirtdeli.com
There's a deli counter, plenty of butcher paper and enough Jay's
potato chips to feed all the frat boys at neighboring Cans. The only
thing missing is sandwiches: In place of corned beef and tuna salad,
this deli dishes out customized t-shirts. Here's how it works: pick an
unadorned American Apparel t-shirt for yourself, your mother-in-law,
your boyfriend, your little nephew or your dog (most shirts hover around
$20). Then have the shirt decorated with any words ($1 each letter),
decals ($9 each) or combination thereof that your inner t-shirt designer
can dream up. This spring, look for hip Bucktownians sporting the Deli's
newest decal of eighties glitter-doll Jem or politically charged tees
asking "What would Jesus bomb?" (M/W)
Una Mae's Freak Boutique
1422 N. Milwaukee (773)276-7002
unamaes.com
Una Mae's is a haven of quirky charm with stars on the ceiling, a
chandelier made of dolls and enough incense to perfume all of Milwaukee
Avenue. Owner Nancy Becker stocks her vintage boutique with clothing,
shoes and accessories for both men and women. Female treasures from days
of yore include polyester dresses from the seventies, froufrou pink
ballerina dresses ($40) and hot pink, satiny cocktail confections ($38).
For men, dress shirts and suit jackets are meticulously arranged by
color and vintage suede jackets (about $50) have that Marlboro Man
appeal. Accessories include rainbow-striped legwarmers ($10), belt
buckles shaped like cassette tapes and a large selection of vintage
jewelry. A small selection of new merchandise includes pieces from The
People Have Spoken. (M/W)

See description in Lincoln Park section. (W/M/WS/MS)
Vive La Femme
2115 N. Damen (773)772-7429
vivelafemme.com
Vive La Femme is vivacious indeed with hot pink walls, disco balls,
black boas and plenty of leopard print. An always-open bar keeps
customer sipping from shiny pink cups; things really get going during
special events like the Abba-themed "Flabba" party at this plus-size
boutique. This spring, ask about Abby Z's sparkly v-neck, empire waist
top ($125) referred to by the staff as the "incredible date-getting
top." Lightweight velvet jackets by Polly Says ($225) come in a palette
of bright, springy colors. Queen Latifah's stylist stopped by to pick up
a pink silk jacket by Schaart and the folks from Harpo Studios love
Jessica Svoboda jeans ($125-$165). (W) Look for the store to move a few
doors down to new digs this spring.
GOLD COAST/NEAR NORTH
Clever Alice
750 N. Franklin (312)587-8693
cleveralice.net
The hip-as-can-be gallery district is the perfect backdrop for
Clever Alice. The store offers fashion-forward designs from
up-and-coming labels; the look is artsy, edgy and utterly put together.
"We try to buy pieces that can be worn several different ways--either to
a dressy event or paired with jeans," says buyer Jessica Barrer. This
spring, stock up on high-waisted bubble skirts from Manisse ($130),
lacy, corseted "going out" tops ($150) from Cesar and bamboo kimono
knits from Cristi Conaway ($370). A new shipment from Mimi Turner
features suits and cocktail dresses in full-of-pizzazz fabrics like
silver linen. Accessorize with metallic clutches from Almas and jewelry
from local artist Veronica Riley Martens. (W/WS)
G'bani
949 N. State (312)440-1718
gbani.com
This unique space truly caters to those looking for la dolce vita.
Husband and wife team Trevian and B.J. Kutti regularly travel to Europe
to keep their Gold Coast store stocked strictly with the latest global
trends. Their impressive stiletto offering will please even the woman
with a hundred pairs of shoes. With a lush décor, the shop lends a
feeling of warm and wealth. Find plunging dresses by Patrizia Pepe and
Roberto Cavalli, with prices ranging from $180 to $4,000. Service
corresponds to pricing: G'bani will do everything from personal shopping
to booking pedicure appointments. (W/M/WS)
Ikram
873 N. Rush (312)587-1000
ikram.com
If Vogue's opinion on fashion means anything, Ikram is the
source for women's fashion in Chicago (well, women with a sky-haute
budget, anyway). The 4,000-square-foot boutique feels like a sanctified
shrine to couture: offerings from fashion gods like Alexander McQueen,
Azzedine Alaia and Comme des Garcons are beautifully showcased against
the store's crimson walls. A famous champion of emerging talent, owner
Ikram Goldman also represents an assortment of up-and-coming designers
like Proenza Schouler and Thakoon. This spring, "must-have accessories"
include shell necklaces by Fenton. Ranging from $100 to $300, the pieces
are all one-of-a-kind. Ikram ladies are getting their kicks this season
with Kork Ease shoes ($185), made famous in the seventies and making a
multicolored comeback this season. (W/WS)
Jake
939 N. Rush (312)944-5553
shopjake.com
The about-town fellas who own this boutique are named Jim Wetzel and
Lance Lawson. With not a Jake among `em, how did the boutique get its
name? Think Jake Ryan from "Sixteen Candles" and--if you're too young
for that--think gorgeous dude in ahead-of-the-times styles. The Rush
Street Jake, a slightly fancier counterpart to its Lakeview location,
stocks shoes, accessories and so-stylish-it-hurts threads for men and
women. Lines like Willow, Phillip Lim, Pegah Anvarian and Sass & Bide
are fresh from the pages of WWD and bear the runway-ready price tags to
match. Men can choose from cult lines like Cloak, Oliver Spencer and
Nice Collective. This season, must-have items include woven,
wood-platform sandals by Loeffler Randall ($460). (W/M/WS)
Only She
8 E. Delaware Place (312)335-1353
onlyshechicago.com
Adopting the philosophy that style rests in inner beauty instead of
in passing trends, Only She features a collection of clothing and
accessories for the post-Juicy Couture crowd; shoppers here tend to fall
into the 30-plus age range and prices are ripe for more mature bank
accounts. Only She reflects a modern, global sensibility in a space
replete with red wicker tables, zebra-print rugs and quotes from Maya
Angelou painted on the walls. Represented designers include Annette

If watching Lindsey Lohan rifle through Michael Stars sounds like a
day in retail heaven, head to this celebrity-endorsed Walton Street
boutique. Owner Samantha Mittleman used rosebud-covered lampshades,
shaggy pink rugs and a white ostrich-skin couch to create a kitschy-cute
style haven. The shop is stocked with clothing, shoes and accessories
for would-be Laguna Beach bums and their hip urban moms. Look for items
from Ya Ya, Joystick and Primp along with denim from Joe's and True
Religion. This spring, work al fresco cocktail bashes in patterned
dresses from Trina Turk ($325) accessorized with a pile of Abraham
bangles ($45). (W/WS)
Sugar Magnolia
34 E. Oak Street (312)944-0885
Jeffrey and Leslie Gertsen, owners of this 33-year-old Oak Street
standby, harbor as much love for the Grateful Dead as for cutting-edge
trends. The couple's sunny storefront boutique offers up women's
clothing and accessories that reflect the Gertsen's laid-back but
utterly stylish vibe. Couture in point: tissue-thin wife beaters bearing
glittery images of Bob Marley ($34), crinkly, tie-died cardigans from
Marika Charles ($235) and buttery cashmere sweaters with rhinestone
peace signs. This spring, Sugar Magnolia's channeling Audrey Hepburn in
"Two for the Road": Leslie recommends pairing Cigarette-style J Brand
jeans (about $140) with ladylike, metallic wedge shoes from Dolce Vita
($95). (W/WS)

Exclusive is an understatement when talking about this high-end shoe
mecca. Czech-Austrian (and maybe supermodel) owner Marky, descendent
from a family of fashion connoisseurs, works intimately with European
designers to create one-of-a-kind shoes that come in groups of six--six
sizes of each shoe, one pair per size. Though a few purses line the
walls of this elegant, mostly by-appointment boutique (walk-in traffic
is also welcome), Marky's clientele comes for the selection of dazzling
handmade footwear. Shoes start at about $250, but can run as high as
$1,300 if snakeskin and semi-precious stones are more up your alley.

at a price, though--and prices here begin around $150 for a summer shoe
and top off around $1,200 for a fall boot. Manager and buyer Dayanara
Ramirez says the salon carries shoes through size 12, which is not
common for boutiques, and focuses on "unique styles so the customer
knows they're getting something they can't get elsewhere," like a
croco-wedge laced up the heel corset-style from Giuseppe Zanotti ($565),

Espace (the French word for "space") is a new source of funky shoes,

"I wanted to give local folks access to what's hot in Paris, London and
New York right now, not two or three years down the line, when it
typically hits this city's shelves" says owner Jung Ee. Luckily,
Espace's prices, hovering around the $100-mark, aren't comparable to
price tags on the European runway. Ee's sleek space, inspired by the

Surrounded by strip-mall blandness, Plein Aire (meaning "fresh air"
in French) is a breath of just that: the roomy store boasts
buttercup-yellow walls, light wood floors and chandelier-lit fitting
rooms. Such mellow environs prove the perfect backdrop for an array of
clothing and accessories that co-owner Jacquie Barrios (along with Jill
Carroll) describes as "comfortable and classic, but with a subtle edge."
Plein Aire has the Illinois exclusive on fab-fitting jeans by Denim for
Immortality ($230) and breezy summer dresses from BGN Paris (most under
$100). Hot-for-spring items include silky blouses from Hale Bob and
jeans by Hollywood-favorite line Genetic. Prices at Plein Aire are
relatively reasonable, with tops ranging from $45-$90, most dresses in
the $100 range and jeans selling for as low as $76. (W)
