Spring 2006's alternative hem-lengths and neutral color schemes are
reason enough to stay grounded with flat heels. Designers such as Marc
Jacobs and Kenneth Cole paired pretty patterned pieces with simplistic
and timeless ballet skimmers and cutout leather flats reminiscent of the
season's carefree elegance. Jacobs feminized his footwear with bows and
satin, while Cole optioned for lustered leathers and structured
simplicity. "Ultra flats are being shown all over this season, from
very strappy and minimal-esque to peep-toe and very open," says Kai
Robertson of Pump, 1659 West Division. "Very soft metallic colors are
back, as well as unexpected hues like bright red for summer. The heel
being shown now is very soft and round, less defined from a kitten heel
with a low profile." Robertson suggests tie-up BCBG shoes ($79) and
metal-hued offerings from Max Studio ($106) to pair with everything from
shorts to sundresses. The ballerina skimmer, a look loved by fashion
icon Audrey Hepburn, is revised this year with satin accents, strap
detailing and buttery smooth leathers. City Soles, 3729 North Southport,
offers an ultra-girly option with cotton candy-colored pointe shoes from
Repetto for the aspiring dancer, featuring a touch of suede on the
square-shaped toe. "Another option for a flat sandal that is big for
spring is the gladiator sandal," says Robertson. Imitation of Christ's
of-the-moment designer Tara Subkoff's visions for Easy Spirit and Marc
Jacobs rubber black gladiator sandals look surprisingly sexy when paired
with flowing florals and loose dresses. Give heels a rest by working
simple low shoes in with basics for an instant update to an outdated
wardrobe and putting a flat-foot forward this season.
