The Orb Live

Duke Shin

Dr. Alex Paterson and his assorted crew of ambient-minded collaborators were at it for the better side of a decade before "Little Fluffy Clouds" was Farfegnugenned into America's collective consciousness in the late nineties. Their first release, in 1988, "Tripping on Sunshine," was a collaboration between the KLF's Jimmy Cauty and Paterson. The seminal "Kiss EP" was released a year later, and Paterson's star began to rise as he began DJing around London, especially when he got a residency at Land of Oz's chill-out room at seminal super-club Heaven (at, ahem, Paul Oakenfold's request). The Orb quickly followed up with the breakthrough double-album "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld, "which included the epic Minnie Rippington-sampling "A Huge Ever Pulsating Brain That Rules From the Centre of the Ultraworld." Despite the Orb's successes, the next decade would see a veritable revolving door of Orb co-conspirators, leading some to view Patterson as the Axel Rose of ambient dubtronica. Of course Patterson's Orb actually managed to continue releasing breakthrough albums, remixes and singles along the way. Now solidly aligned with longtime Orb contributor Thomas Fehlmann, The Orb is hitting the road in support of their latest opus "Okie Dokie It's The Orb on Kompakt," which marks their album debut for--you guessed it, those kool Krauts at Kompakt.
