Peter pan collars, kicky knee socks and bubble-hemmed shorts for spring
2006 prove the lure of Lolita-esque looks aren't lost on grownups.
Designers paid homage to the literary legend by featuring schoolgirl
sweet styles in their collections this season. New fashion darling Derek
Lam showcased prim and proper silk blouses with fetching collars, while
Karl Lagerfeld masterfully dressed his prim solid suits in Chanel's
signature camellias and satin bows. The look is easy to translate from
the runway to the windy city, says Kimmy Green, buyer for the Southport
boutique Shane, 3750 North Southport. "This spring season is all about
feeling girly and fresh," says Green. "Mix and match neutrals are
complemented by soft pastels and will be shown on free-flowing skirts
and lacy blouses to set the trend for spring." Women worried about
looking like a girl scout should tackle the trend in baby steps, opting
first for playful accessories like knee socks, bows on the backs of
skirts, or demure collars. Aspiring nymphets can also seek out pieces by
Chicago-based designer and fan of everything flirty Doris Ruth by Allie
Adams, available at Red Head Boutique, 3450 North Southport. Her spring
2006 collection features candy-colored blouses adorned with sheer, puffy
sleeves, melon micro-bubble hemmed skirts and tailored, demure blazers.
Shoes also sweeten up this season. Flimsy ballerina slippers by Repetto,
available at City Soles/Niche, look as though lifted from the tote bag
of a girl on her way to dance class. Marc Jacobs' spring 2006 collection
is another line to look at for girlish kicks. His Marc by Marc Jacobs
collection includes a lingerie-esque strappy silk slipper in gold and
ballet-pink and flats featuring a big, black bow decorating the toe.
