San Francisco-based quintet Film School explores both the hipster chic
and the growing popularity of space-rock in its simple-yet-loaded
self-titled release on Beggars Banquet, a pleasing affair all the way
around with its static-heavy guitars and echoed vocal triumphs. Never
overbearing or pretentious, the record makes the most of drummer Donny
Newenhouse's off-center and pulsing stop-and-start beats, while the dual
guitars veer in and out of the distinguishable verses and choruses,
reverbed to the max, blasting chaotically through your ears. If done
right live, it'll be deafening and hypnotizing. The songs carry on at
times past the five-minute mark, and while that signals death for many
rock bands, Film School pulls it off with staggering effect. Songs like
"Harmed," which starts with a lush bass line and sweeping drums and
catapults into a powerful verse explosion, are the kind of songs that
make a band memorable for sure. Film School plays March 2 at Schubas, 3159 North Southport,
(773)525-2508, at 9pm. $10.
