Tip of the Week
Sammy Harkham, Kevin Huizenga, Anders Nilsen

Tom Lynch

Three of the top youngsters of the graphic-novel world are together at Quimby's this Saturday night, brought to you by Drawn and Quarterly, Fantagraphics and the Center for Cartoon Studies. Los Angeles man Sammy Harkham's "Poor Sailor" strip earned him deserved recognition, and he found it both re-published--it was originally in "Kramers Ergot 4"--in "The Best American Nonrequired Reading" of 2004 and in multiple different languages. Once picked by the Comics Journal as "Minimalism Cartoonist of the Year," Kevin Huizenga, whose "Glenn Games" won him an Ignatz award, discusses his recent work, "Or Else." My personal favorite of the three, Anders Nilsen, author of "The Ballad of the Two-Headed Boy" and the "Big Questions" series, presents his recent Drawn and Quarterly effort, "Dogs and Water," a beautiful, sad and minimalist adventure tale.

Harkham, Huizenga and Nilsen discuss their work February 25 at Quimby's, 1854 West North, (773)342-0910, at 7pm. Free.

Stars light, Stars bright
There's no question that Montreal has become the new hotbed for emerging indie-pop acts, most notably The Arcade Fire and Stars' label mates Broken Social Scene, which includes some members of Stars on its roster. The city seems dead-set on becoming the new capital for the organically sad, talented and pretty

103.5 Kiss FM is giving away a free, err, Hummer, to the contestant who keeps their lips locked on the truck the longest, in a promotion seemingly unaware of its salacious subtext

Tip of the Week
Usually when a band is described as "warm melodic pop," red lights flash and sirens howl indicating an imposter has trespassed and is trying to sound like The Magnetic Fields. Adam Pierce, the main man behind New York band Mice Parade, takes the tag in another direction
